What is the purpose of the "strap" on top of the motor?

There is a metal looped strap that is bolted with the front passenger side intake bolt, and is coated with a rubber/plastic material. What is the purpose of this piece? Some think it is a heater hose retainer, but I have never seen an original car with one of these in use this way. Was it left there at the factory to allow ease of installation of the motor into the chassis?

That could be because isn't there a hoop on the driveside rear of the block for the other hoist hook?

There is a bracket for the brake booster hose to go through, and it is mounted to the rear drivers head. That's the only other thing on that side that I can think of.

There is a eye on the back of the block, cast in, drivers side, kitty corner this strap.

I also believe these are picking eyes for installation. I have seen plug wires run through them, heater hoses run thru them, and of course, seen them missing :Dou:

    Good question :TU:

Hey, let's see more pics of under that hood........looks pretty tidy :beer

I'll go grab a look at my car to see if I can find the cast eye in the back of the block...now that you mention it, I think I remember it.

The picture is from my LeSabre I sold this Fall. Here are the last pictures I took of it - I have a lot of pride in this one, it turned out nice. This Spring, I hope to make my Centurion even better than this car.

It is the factory engine hoist loop used to lift and transport the engine in the plant.

Adam remember the old pics of the engines at Flint that were hooked up and ran on something like and overhead tram? Maybe Mike Trom posted them.

Yes those pics are a great illustration of how they were used to hook up to and transport the engines.

I really hate the Flint buildings were demolished before the 100th and before toured them. Can you imagine the Buick foundry, the gigantic stamping machines etc in action along with all those overhead trams transporting engines and so forth. Must have been a real experience.

What they said, I used both to hoist the engine out of the Electra parts car.

I thought that was there to help remove that ugly, unwanted skin from your knuckles.

I think I still have mine on the car, great for swapping engines.

A nice way to restore these loops is clean all the old rubber off then clean again. Get some red Plastic Dip and dip the whole loop into the can holding it by the bolt hole with a piece of wire. Hang it up and let it dry and repeat dipping maybe three times. When done paint it Buick red and it will look brand new.
