What makes a 455 a stage1

Discussion in 'Buick FAQ' started by American Muscle, Oct 23, 2007.

  1. I have a 72 455 I have not done all the research necessary to determine it's a standard 455 or a stage1 and I am not really sure where to start. Presuming it's a standard 455 what would make it a stage1? or presuming it's a stage1 how do I identify it?

Check the 2 letter code on the block surface, for 72 it should be a WS. Otherwise you will have to pull the heads and see if they have the larger valves. There is no part number difference between standard and stage 1 block and heads. Could someone post a link here on where to locate the stampings please?? :TU: :TU: Also check the distributor number and carb number.

  3. I have checked the carb number and it is the right number for the 72 stage 1, 7042242. Where is the number located on the dist?

On 1972, the vin number will tell you if it is a stage one car but the motor may have been changed or replaced. The fifth character will be a "V". The "V' represents Stage 1. If it is a "U" then it is just a 455 car.

  6. Thanks everyone for your help! Can you tell I am a rookie at this. I don't have a lot of history on this vehicle. It was abandoned, I picked it up from a friend that rescued it. It came with a 350 with the engine compartment striped of everything. I bought a 455 from the same friend, I am working on getting the history for it now but meanwhile I am trying to get definitive identification of what it is. Thanks again for your help!:TU:
