WIX is what I use on everything now. I used Fram many years ago, but ever since Allied Signal moved their production overseas and the quality dived, I avoid them like the plague. If you shop online, you can find WIX oil filters for $3-4 a pop.
The best oil filter . . . "lemmy-67" recommends the WIX filter; the part numbers I have for WIX are 51258 and 51618. The one I prefer is the Purolator L25288 Classic Oil Filter, which was on sale at a local store last year for $1.49, so I cleaned 'em out, snagging 11 filters at that low price. Without knowing what your definition of "best" is, and all of the various criteria that the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) as well as the high performance industry would add toward that definition, I will nevertheless provide a few of the many potential "best" oil filter recommendations for you, as follows -- including a pricing basis as evidenced on Amazon.com right now http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sx_as?k...ehicle=1967-45-21457-20---29--16285------13-1 Here are some to choose from, with the displayed Amazon price as well: Baldwin B39 Lube Spin-On Filter - $5.70 Bosch L3423 Long Life Oil Filter - $13.08 Fram PH25 Extra Guard Passenger Car Spin-On Oil Filter - $7.11 Hastings LF222 Full-Flow Lube Oil Spin-On Filter - $9.75 OEM OF1029 Oil Filter - $9.65 Pennzoil HPZ-28 Platinum Spin-on Oil Filter - $6.48 Pennzoil PZ-28 Regular Spin-on Oil Filter - $6.19 Pentius PLB25 Red Premium Line Spin-On Oil Filter - $8.14 Pentius PLB3675 Red Premium Line Spin-On Oil Filter - $ 7.46 Purolator L25288 Classic Oil Filter - $5.49 Purolator PSL25288 Synthetic Spin-On Oil Filter - $10.49 Quaker State QS3675A Spin-On Oil Filter - $4.99 (less at Menards; sometimes with a rebate) Wix 51258 Spin-On Lube Filter - $9.43 The best oil filter is like beauty; it's in the eye of the beholder. Get some facts to go on; search the Internet, look for the real oil filter test criteria and see who posted results, cut filters open, etc.
I always avoid fram usualy got purulator brand or boshe for the amc Baldwin is a great filter ..one of the better one for catching debri have to look at the micron ratings too wix is another easy choice
I use Bosch. Otherwise I have used Wix, and Motorcraft if Bosch is not handy. Won't use Fram, and I am too cheap to pay for K&N. I do run a K&N air filter element, but I figure it will last a long time so more like a one-time purchase.
Just start cutting them apart with a hacksaw after your oil change. You'll learn for yourself what is a good filter and what isn't. It should be a standard Internet requirement to have to cut open 10 oil filters before you're allowed to ask this question... -BC
