What posi?

I'm trying to decide which posi would be the best choice for me. The car is light, about 2400lbs, and will have a blown 340 and 2004r with 3.54 gears in a dana44 type housing (jag). It will be street driven almost exclusively and frequently see curvy/hilly terrain with some freeway use. Occasionally it will be on a road race course and maybe see a dragstrip once or twice.

I intended to use a PowerLok but am having a little trouble getting a 3 series case for it at a price I'm willing to pay. A friend sent me a TracLock by mistake, which has slightly worn clutches. And now I'm thinking that if I have to spend $250 to get a PowerLok case I might as well consider spending the extra to get a TrueTrac. It would be a lot of help if I could get some opinions on this.

The engine is being built near stock high compression with limited boost. Horsepower goal is about 400. Torque will be somewhat higher than stock, probably in the 400-500 range.

Have you considered something like an air-locker?

How much street use will this see?

I'd just as soon stay away from the expensive and complex options. Almost all of the driving will be on the street, but with the light weight, wheelspin is a definite problem. In the past I used a lucky spring setup to get equal traction and a level ride but that's now gone. Going to IRS maybe the need for a posi will be less but I need a carrier regardless so I may as well have one.

My experience with the TracLock is that in a short period of time the clutches will wear, and gradually continue to get worse until they have to be replaced. I'd rather avoid that. The PowerLoc which has steel plates for clutches seems it would last longer but would probably still wear. However, both of these can be set up with shims to the desired stiffness. I don't like differential work, but I can do it if I have to.

The TrueTrac, being a helical gear posi sort of like the Torsen supposedly has no wear parts which is good, but I've heard they are limited in the amount of torque they can handle which could be a problem. I get the impression they are all three pretty comparable in engagement characteristics. Anyone know how much torque the TrueTrac can handle?

True trac Would be the better choice for your driving. The True Trac is a great design for a DRIVING ...Meaning curves and hills and freeway etc. That unit handles the road conditions very predictable... Here as a traditional Friction type limited slip unit (Auburn, Eaton, Power Lock etc) will release yes but of too much traction is lost in the corners the unit locks back up and will cause that sliding effect we all either LOVE or HATE...=:O So for a traditional burn out drag race street strip car the friction type units are what the muscle cars like and live for on the snakey burn out . More control still good burn outs but more control in the curves and rally car the True Trac is the better choice.

I can get you a true trac for about 420.00 and the power lock for about 335.00. For your 3.54 rear. I can also get Auburn posi (335.00) and your trac toc(310 .00)you don't want All these are new in the box units.

    Hope this info helps. Jim

Jim - Are you using a rear end out of a Jaguar? Most came with posi, if I remember correctly. I think they were actually Salisbury units.
