Hello, Can anyone identify what rear this might be by this photo? I am not well versed on axles/gears. I know it is not original to my '72, the person I bought the car from told me the original was switched out years ago and he didn't remember what it was. I did not see any numbers on the axle shaft for id. If someone could give me some advice that would be great! Thanks, Rich
Looks like an 8.2 ,which means 70 or earlier . 71 up 8.5's have square ears at the bottom . Need to pull cover to check for posi and ratio for sure.
I can't tell what rear that is, but I can tell you that the original rear would have been the 8.5 10 bolt with bolt in axles. Too bad it was replaced as that is a good strong rear. Take a better picture of the cover head on, and also the rear U joint where it connects to the drive shaft. Probably an 8.2 Which 8.2 will determine how available parts are. Monzaz will be able to ID it for you.
I jacked up the car this morning and took some more pics. I also checked the ratio. It is a posi unit, 3.42 ratio.
Thats def a. 8.2 Not worth putting $$ into for complete build 71-72 10bolt hybrid rear would of been ideal to build if it was still under the car... If you want to go overkill on a built rear, S60 is the way to go Legend also makes a strong d44 based rear thatll take anything built ford 9in is only as good as the pinion support..and when they break they tend to take out DS and transmission while destroying the center section.. Gm 12bolt with ford 9in torino housing ends through scandc.com if wanting to keep it GM..this is essentially 71/72 buick/olds 8.5 but better carrier selection with option to go past a 30 spline axleshaft..
Well, I am converting to a 4 speed, M21 trans. and putting in a stock 455 engine. If there are no issues with the rear now, this rear should be fine? If not, what would be my options? Do I need to get a whole new rear axle? if so, can someone tell me what years of car/truck would work?
68 72 abody chev, pont, olds , buick all those fit but if there is no problem with it now , just wait till you blow it up then talk to monzaz on the board , he can set you up with a well built 8.5 that will work very well for your setup.
