i have a 72 lark w bop 8.2 2.56 now and want something lower i think it will be cheaper to buy a whole used rearend what other models from other kinds of cars (any year or make)will bolt in without any mods and do i have to shorten the driveline nomatter what unless i stay w a bop 8.2 i'm willing to roam the junkyards but what models of cars should i look for and should i get the drive line if it also an a body th350 ( i would think this would be the only one that would fit)
i believe so not sure out of what year but its got the notched diff cover and bolt in axles (8.2 right)
should be an 8.5 already in your 72'. if it wasn't swaped out for some reason. I just did a rear swap in my 71' Skylark to a new 8.5 3.73 rear. I removed the 8.2 3.23 in the car already when i bought it, which I knew was not the original rear.
What does it look like? Try this link for some pix. Rear Identification The 8.5 is a great rear if that is what you have. Might need a rebuild but parts are available.
Should be a 8.5. Check the u -joint to yoke attachment. The 8.2 uses u-bolts with nuts, the 8.5 uses brackets with cap screws. Both rears will have bolt in axles. The 8.5 is a great rear with parts a plenty.
The 8.5 can have the notched diff cover, among several other options. My 72 had the cover that looked like an 8.2 or a pontiac with the notches on the sides. look for two "square" tabs jutting out from the bottom of the center section casting on either side, lower corners. These are a good indicator of an 8.5
you guys sure know how to dissapoint a guy "should have a 8.5" well damnit i have an 8.2 someone robbed it before i got the car damn
Any of the coil spring 8.5 rears from the GM A bodys would bolt right in, but get the driveshaft with it.
Well I suggesty you send us pictures of the rear anyway just in case. Better to be safe and know what you have then be looking for something you may already have. Good luck. Jim
