Mat it and leave on the trans break

Converter is my old one, stalls at 4600 rpm ( need a new one)
On dyno peak torque 654 is at 5500 rpm's, HP peaks 779.8 at 7,000 rpm

    1st gear shift 7100
    2nd gear shift 6900
    through the traps 7,000

    weight w/driver 3,070 pounds

Mine is shifting at 4950, regardless of me manually shifting it. It would run better if it allowed me to shift at around 5400. So, what mods need to be done to the trans to get it to shift where I need it to?

    John,

Use the B&M kit listed above. Should be available from Jegs or Summit for under $30. In my case, I used the #2 and #3 weights and one green, one yellow spring for 5700rpm shifts. Experimentation with combos will net the results you want. It's not difficult but plan on losing a pint or so of fluid each time you pull the governor.

I try to hit my shifts at 5900to6000, I hit the big end about the same rpm. I have been thinking about modifying the trans to shift itself at 5900. Right now it shifts at about only 4600 in drive. I tried modifying the governor to raise the shift but my light throttle shift points went sky high also, it would not shift to 3rd till 60mph at light throttle so I must have done something wrong with the governor. With the stock governor it shifts into drive at about 20mph. Tom

John, what are you, kidding? Aren't you the guy who was afraid of rpms? You're running the same basic combination as me and we're running almost identical numbers. Did you really think you could do all that without revving it??

    Doug,

Our combos are VERY similar. I just wish I could get my car to leave the line like yours does. I think some people (I was one of those guys) dont understand ..... if you want to go 155 mph then you must spin the engine to a given RPM to get to that MPH. I guess I was thinking we would be able to go with a lower gear (4.10 or 3.90) to compensate for the rpm. BUT.... the car does not want to leave the line with those gears. So the 4.33s went back in and the car picked up a .10.

Right now I have almost 9% converter slipage. If I can get that down to 6% and save a few hundred trap rpms then we may put in a 4.56 rear gear.

But yes.... I was very wrong in saying your crazy for spinning your engine.... if you want to go fast... ya gotta spin it!

Shifting where the number say is the best, isn't always the best. I tend to go seat of the pants. When it stops pulling hard its time to switch. Most cars will still pull hard well past where the numbers say to shift. Course I do very little real drag racing but on the street full rpm shifts tend to win 9x's out of 10.

I would check the electric Kickdown on your transmission. If it is inoperative, the transmission will shortshift.

You can get a B&M Shift modifier kit from Summit or Jegs for about $30. Simple procedure of changing weights and springs on the governor to bring your shift points up while leaving the trans in Drive. It takes some trial and error to get it where you want but is not difficult. I'd guess you can move it to 5000 or higher on a stock 455 depending on where it falls off.

I agree Gary, the B&M kit is a great way to tailor your WOT shift points, and fun to install  and test. But if Simon's trans is shifting at 4000 WOT, I can pretty much guarantee, that the kickdown is either not operating, or disconnected. He has to fix that first before working with the kit.
