around 12 initial, and 32-36 total, all in at 2000-2500 rpm

Hello, I don't know my initial but probably about 20-22*, I have run 34* total for years, I tried 32* this year and I think it picked up a little ET and MPH. If I get a day when track is hooking consistant I want to run 34* one pass and 32* next pass just to see if thats what helped or something else. I get full advance at about 1800 rpm. I have tried a locked advance at 32* but real tough on the starter getting it going when engine is warm, I have a mini starter and it snaped the head off one of the mounting bolts set up that way so I went back to a short quick curve, cut it back at cranking just enough so it would not kill the starter, had real nice throttle responce with it locked though. Tom,why do you prefer 20-22* initial?

    Thanks

I also run about 34 degrees total, don't remember what initial ends up being.

My engine likes 34 all in by about 2500. Don't know what the initial is.

what would be a good initial?why do some people run like 18-22 initial ?

    Thanks

i think it has to do with the bigger cams will idle at lower rpms, but it make for harder starts when the moter is hot.

George-it has been found that a lot of initial advance helps to tame the unpleasant effects on idle of a rather long duration cam.It helps smooth out the idle, allows for better off-idle response and in my case allowed me to go with a slower idle speed.Better than listening to the trans clunk into gear! If you think about it in relative terms it is allowing a cylinder firing sequence (after intake opening) roughly similar to a shorter duration cam(on the intake side).I run about 22* with a HK cam and it made a big improvement.Rod

ok so its somewhat better to run a higher initial than a lower.

    Thanks

i guess as long as you dont have problems starting it

higher initial will create more cylinder pressure therefore it can create a run on or dieseling problem?

    Thanks

Well, if the ignition system is turned off (there is no longer a spark) it can't contribute to a run-on/dieseling problem. Has to be a function of mixture continuing to enter the chamber and being lit off by waste heat and pressure - like a diesel.

Oh - and by the way, I run 14 initial, a couple degrees of vacuum advance, and no bushing in the distributor so I guess my total is probably pretty high. But, I run an MSD adjustable timing controller to de-tune from the driver's seat if I get any detonation or, "tune-up" if I get better gas, cooler temps, or more elevation.

I run 16* initial, 32* total, all in at 2200 RPM. I have the MSD Digital 6 set to retard the spark 2* at 4200 RPM and up. I also run 10* vacuum advance hooked to manifold vacuum.

8 degrees initial, all in at 2800 rpm, total = 32 degrees.

Works well in my very light car - 32 roadster @ 2400# - and 3.70 gears.
With 9/1 compression ratio I can run 87 octane on the hottest days of summer with no detonation or pre-ignition problems.

The vac advance is selected to full time vacuum and has 16 degrees of vacuum advance at 19.5" of vacuum.
The car runs cool in traffic on the hottest days.

I run alot of initial because of the cam I have. I have to have alot of ignition timing to get it to idle decent in gear at stoplight. It also helps responce at the drag races. If I could get it started I would have it locked at 32* all the time. Tom
