    >>Hi Pete. I had the rubber trunk mat in my 71 Skylark for a while until I realized that condensation had collected underneath the mat and created surface rust over most of my trunk. I took a wire brush to the rust and took it all off, then I used POR-15 chasis black and painted the entire trunk. When this was completed I bought the trunk splatter paint and redid the trunk. Lastly, don't forget to spray the trunk with a clear coat to give it some extra protection. No more rust has appeared in my trunk since I did all this. I'm not putting in another rubber mat either - I saw a posting on some Buick board (perhaps here) that said a black felt mat could be made from materials from Home Depot.

P.S. I didn't use a primer but I know that POR-15 does sell one - just go to their website.

Try POR15 in the trunk area.. They sell a trunk kit pretty reasonable... Try ebay just put in POR15 in the buy catagory... Primer will only mask the problem and the rust will came right back...With por15 there is a three part system of cleaning and etching that prepares the surface and the rust will NEVER come back..Read the instructions carfully once you get it and follow it to the letter....There are some parts stores that also carry POR15 make some calls... Good Luck.. Randy.

    Rust.........

Hey Pete , Try this Rust Converter : Either "Rust Mort" or "Ospho" . These are usually only available at local paint shops . It works Great ! Use gloves , shield & mask . When it contacts the rust it "Fumes Hard" . Then go over it with the "Por 15" or "Zero Rust" which can also be gotten at the local Automotive Paint Stores . Then when it's all cured , do your Spatter Paint / Sealer .

Don't need POR 15 for your problem.
Go to Home Depot and buy this. It is phosphoric acid and will neutralize rust. Same ingredient as Ospho. Costs about $14/gall. Works great and I use it all the time. Wire brush the area first, then vacuum dust/rust particles. Apply with a nylon/polyester brush and let it dry/cure for a few days. Now, use a stiff plastic brush to remove the chalky residue. Vacuum again. Use lacquer thinner or RM Pre-Kleano 901 to wipe the area. Use splatter paint and clear top coat for a final finish. If you want, you can get black cut pile carpeting from Home Depot, 6' width for $3.59 per linear foot. Get about 6' and cut it to fit the floor. Most full size models from 70-81 have black cut pile spare tire covers and that makes for a nice finishing touch!

Get the splatter paint from NAPA, about $6 a can. Works great. You will need about 4-5 cans for proper coverage!

what's wrong with sandblasting the rust?

    You'll get sand EVERYWHERE!
I love the results of sandblasting, but it will make a mess!.....
He could get decent results just by cleaning off loose rust, treating it (I like Picklex), and giving it some good base coats of paint, followed by the topcoat of his choice.
Yes, it's a good idea to apply clear overthe trunk paint....

i agree with the concrete etch/rust remover, i was skeptical when i heard about this, but Holly $h!t it's amazing, used it on my trunk and it disloved all the rust, just keep it wet (the acid need to be moist to work) for the first few hours, then let it dry off and follow the other dirrections above

Coke and Pepsi have phosphoric acid - works well on small areas.

If you have a 65 skylark the process is: 1. lay tire&wheel face down, then put the "J" hook thru the floor attachment, 2. slide the jack base, upside down, down the "j" hook, 3. the bumper hook should have a hole in it, slide this down the "j" hook, 4. attach the large wing nut, tighten and you are done.

    hope this helps

    What a great site!
I'm in process in removing rust in my trunk. My car is a convertible and the back try is pretty rusty. My trunk came with this material that has a foam backing, was fun cleaning that off the metal.
Should I put the same kind of material back in the trunk or should I just paint it? Where can I find the material if I was to go back original?

    Thanks
    Adam

Whatever you do, DO NOT use any type of rubber or plastic liner for the trunk. Save that for shows only. I go to Home Depot and buy the 6' wide cut pile black carpeting. Many 70-80 full size GM models came with black trunk carpet and spare tire cover made from the same cover. I get the spare tire covers and use them.

Finish cleaning your trunk, then apply a light coat of paint or I like to use Professional Undercoat from Autozone as the base material. I spray the entire trunk, light/thin coat. Let it dry and then apply correct aqua/black splatter paint from NAPA.
