Just found a small surprise in our nearly rust free car. Seems like somebody let the drivers side front floor pan sit with water in it.

Anyway, we have a small hole, about the size of two quarters in the pan. Should I patch this? or replace this area? If I can patch it, what would I use?

Hopefully someone will answer this as I am in the same boat as my 71 has just a couple of very small almost pin holes. Not worth changing whole floors I am sure. Maybe just take to a good body guy and ask opinion.

Depends on the surrounding metal and your welding skills.

    1. If the surrounding metal is good....not thin....then you can cut two small metal patches and fit them to the holes.........you can either butt weld or lap weld them.

    2. If the surrounding metal is thin, open the holes/cut out the rusted area until you get to good metal. Otherwise, when you go to weld........you will just blow right through it.

    3. If this is not a show car......and metal is good.....use some fiberglass mat and resin and you will be fine. Use some duct tape and wax paper on the bottom side of the pan to form a mold and prevent any resin from running/dripping through. You can then use duraglass to finish the bottom side for smooth finish. Let it cure and sand smooth.

Like George said,if it's not a show or points car you can use a product called POR-15 that works excellent and is easy to use.Price is good also.Comes in different sizes as well for different size jobs.Eastwood Company sells it.

I for one am against rust ! I say rid your car of it ! Maybe you can just use a small patch from a good floor . From time to time good floor sections shoe up on the site
