I am getting ready to paint the chasis & suspensoin parts on my 70 Skylark. Parts have been sandblasted & primed first with etching primer and then standard grey primer. What is a good brand of chasis paint to use. I don't want someting high gloss but would still like a small amout of shine to the paint (semi gloss). Thanks for any advice.
You're off to a good start....sandblast and prime....for a topcoat you have a few options. I'm using an epoxy per Jim Weise's recommendation: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?t=57472&highlight=viking+paints It's a nice product, and easy to use. You can adjust the ratio of gloss/flat catalyist to produce the shine you desire. Another option is to just buy some black urethane from your local auto paint store, and add some flattener. One more option is to just use a pre-mixed semi-gloss chassis paint from POR-15 or Bill Hirsch. Please be sure to use the proper safety precautions....respirator or better yet, a supplied-air source, such as Hobby-air http://www.autobodystore.com/SprayBooth.htm
Eastwood Extreme chasis black? I was looking at Eastwood's Extreme chasis black but the description says "not reccomended for use with etching primers". Does anyone know why this would not work with etching primer. If I sprayed etching primer with other primer on top would this be OK as it would not be directly on top of the etching primer?
I believe they don't recommend etching primer becaues they have there own way of making the paint material stick to the metal... Like POR 15 you need to use Metal ready and acid etching and apply it right to the metal.. I think scince you already have it prepaired with etching primer then use the stuff Jim recommends .. Randy
Does anyome know where to get the Viking Paint reccommended by Jim? I did a web search and found a Viking Paints in Minnesota but I'm not sure if it the right place bucause their web site does not say much.
I called Viking paints and the customer service was HORRIBLE!!!! I could have got more help from my two year old nephew. The lady I spoke to was not knowledgable or helpful in any way. I will be getting my paint elsewhere.
You could try to give Jim W a call at Trishield. He sold me Viking paint through his company. He also pioneered using it on frames, suspension, etc, so he could answer a lot of your questions. Just a thought....
