I bought what we thought was a 67 400 but when i took the intake and manifold off it has 455 stamped on it the #s just below the 455 stamp are 1231786 can you tell by this # or are there other stamps somewhere else? thanks Al
Looks like a 1970: http://www.atlantabuick.com/CastingNumbers.htm Check the block on the area between the 5 and 7 cylinders where the head meets the block. See if there is a stamp like SF on it.
nice motor. 1970 might also be SR or SS. actually, that's a casting number for the head you've got there, not the block number proper. the 70 block number should be 1231738. it's probably got the small diameter oil pickup so you'll want to check / change that while you're reworking the BBB oil passages. id locations - http://www.buicks.net/shop/reference/engine_ident_where.html
