Surely you meant 1911 not 911. The latter shows up to file the report and call medical examiner

I appreciate the fact that you are looking for advice I coach my son and daughters scholastic trap team and don't consider myself an expert on hand guns but have quite a few from 22s to the SW 460 & 500 we have 2 which we carry Ruger SP101 2" 357 with a crimson trace grip and a SW 380 my wife doesn't have a problem shooting either one

Home defense at my house starts with deterantes. 8 cameras with night vision, one large rottweiler for starters. Property is fenced in , to keep the scumbags out, not the dog in. You'd be silly to ignore the popped , torn apart soccer balls and cow leg bones in the yard , and throw your leg over my fence. If they get in the yard, the AR 15 comes out. If they somehow get in the house, the 18" barrel Mossberg pistolgrip shotgun comes out . The hand guns, Glock 19 and Glock 42 are for protection off the property and at work , althou I do carry them on the property and in the house. And I practice often, drawing , shooting multiple targets scenarios to stay sharp. Having access to a few hundred acre lot behind my house is handy to say the least . I'm friendly with the owner, and he allows me to practice in a sand pit on his land. Gun control is hitting what you are aiming at...... after all.
That said, I have myself , my wife and my dog to protect. If you have kids , an aggressive approach like mine may not be the way to go. They come in the back ,you get your family out the front, let the dog do his thing and run away to fight another day. Jim

You guys can go for your pistols. I’ll take an AR15. You can get off a lot of rounds very quickly. Nerves can get the better of you and you will not be able to control the shake with a pistol. With a rifle jammed into your shoulder you have stability. Much easier to aim. Many home defense experts agree with me. All I know with an AR and a 30 rounder attached I am instantly the man. Would scare most to death.

dl has a problem with guns...

Guns are a tool. Same as a screwdriver and hammer.

Who would want to be caught out without protection in case of a drug crazed lunatic or a charging animal?

I don't know of a utopia where the bad guys cant get you, you are fully protected by "911" and all your debts are forgiven. Guess I don't have enough dirty money to protect me from life's perils.

I Figured you wanted some sound advise since you came to a Buick board about guns and the comments about semi-automatics " jamming".

You have to start someplace right? Asking here with people Ronnie feels comfortable with is a first step. Maybe he feels a bit intimidated by going into a gun store (I used to) or asking strangers on a gun forum. I don't have any issues with him asking here. And to the best of my knowledge, no one has complained yet

Semi Autos do in fact jam. I wanted to throw my Springfield 1911 in the bay when I bought it used. The seller neglected to mention that you couldn't get through one mag without the damn cartridge getting stuck in battery/ feed jamming. So annoying. Once the feed ramp got polished and a new recoil spring got installed, it was GTG. I bought two new mags just to be safe. I did "stove pipe" my Glock once, but that I think was my fault. My Ruger MK III tends to feed jam after so many rounds. 22 rounds tend to dirty up the action quite a bit

For the record, In NY you cant even breathe on a gun without a pistol license. So when I purchased my first hand gun (which was a Glock btw) I had zero experience handling a pistol. I fired it for the first time during my NRA course. Then I got more training, I joined a gun club and shoot every month. I try and shoot 300-400 rounds a month. I have to admit though that Ive slacked off this spring and summer as the Buicks have been taking up all my free time. But come fall, I'll be back at it honing my skill set! I like it second best to Buicks

Assuming you know what you want (revolver) and it needs to be usable by wife (small hands) who is afraid of excessive recoil. I would tell you to look at a Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum. I would also look at a 3 or 4 inch barrel. The SP is a smaller frame and will fit her hands better. Use 38 special for practice but in a pressure situation i bet the full tilt 357 rounds will be fine. Not sure i have ever seen an SP101 in anything but stainless but thats the only way I would buy it. Other options in similar frame sizes can be had from Taurus (cheaper and more likely to have quality issues) to Smith and Wesson (more expensive and marginally better quality).

Several comments above recommending the Judge/Governor type revolvers that shoot 410 shotgun shells or .45 long colt rounds. To me the pistols are badly balanced and while the .45 is a big slow.moving bullet that will do the job i am very skeptical of a 410 shot shells effectiveness out of such a short barrel. A bit of google searching will reward you with just about a 50/50 mix of people who feel the same/different.

Otherwise, Seans advise to practice until blue in the face (and hands) will serve you well with whatever you buy.

I second the .38 revolver, especially for a woman.

.357 has significantly more recoil and muzzle blast than a .38.

I have a Ruger GP100 in .357, and it is perfect for home defense.

AR-15 pistol, Mossberg 590 12-gauge...and a bunch others. The AR pistol allows me to have very accurate shot placement inside 100 yards, with rapid reload capability. Nothing says "wrong house" like the racking of a pump action shotgun! For the wife, I have a nice WW2 era M1 Carbine, which is a dream to shoot, and has very little recoil.

I'm not clear on this...was this meant as call in a professional aka the police ? Or was this a jab at the rednecks on this forum? Either way it is offensive.

Not sure I've seen any "dumb" advice given to Ronnie. What I have seen is some sound opinions from experienced shooters. I also have a hard time believing you don't have a problem with firearms, as I have not seen you jump on other folks asking questions related to hardwood flooring, home electrical advice, or what product is best for removing old varnish from a wooden floor, or any other non Buick related questions that abound on this forum.
Many of us rednecks have as much experience with firearms as trained law enforcement agents do.

BTW, guns are not complicated and do not require "extensive" training as you suggest. They are actually very simple compared to thing such as our old cars. Lots of practice never hurts, but lets be real, yah point it at only what you really and truly intend to kill, and pull the bang switch. A weekend safety course is more than enough to learn the basic rules of thumb. After that, it's up to the user to practice.

go to a range and rent/shoot a JUDGE..its a crazy cool weapon..but i dont think a woman with a small stature could handle it well..

back a few years ago there was a vid of a woman shooting thru a door..it was a taurus company video...and it was a devastating look at the carnage..i tried to find the video and cant..it can decapitate a man..no prob...no prob at all..maybe a snub nose judge with lower power shells would be good for a woman in a house alone..its point and shoot..dont really need to be a marksman..ya need training, but its a devastating weapon with the .410 shells.

i will look for the video..its impressive...and is why i bought one new..

I personally have found that the people who frequent v8Buick are of a higher caliber (no pun intended) than the average internet forum. I’ve seen some very well thought out and knowledgeable answers to many queries on here. Maybe it’s the skills, including problem solving of all types, that comes from not building ‘belly button’ cars that extend to areas beyond the cars. Thus I don’t fault a fellow for asking a non Buick question within this circle of what he hopes are his peers. More wheat, less chaff.

I think Ronnie has gotten some really good advice from this forum. And in a much more civilized manner than I have seen on some of the gun forums...
