...on getting 200ft. lbs. on the crank bolt? I know about dropping rope into a cylinder to lock the motor up but is really that safe? I'm kinda un-easy about going that route but if its the only way... Don't want to screw up any internals this close to lift off...tomorrow Im hoping :Brow:

They do make a tool that grabs and holds the flywheel teeth. Don't know if AutoZone rents it or not, but that, with the help of a friend, will hold the engine so you can torque that bolt down.

Another option I've heard of is putting a breaker bar on the bolt and then tapping the starter to turn the engine and tightening it down that way. Don't know how good that works, but it should............in theory.

    Dont do it!

The breaker bar on the crank bolt will only loosen the bolt. Unless you can get your starter to turn backwards, OOPS! The only way to properly tighten that bolt is to wedge someting between the flywheel and the tranny or engine block. I personally use the flywheel Wrench with a buddy or even getting it wedged in there by itself(the tool, not the buddy). I have a 200 ft,lb torque wrench that I'll pull then after attaining that for a base I'll give it another good twist with the longest breaker bar I own. :Dou: . You'll feel that one in the morning:grin:

I wedged a block into the flywheel and got 150 lbs. on it. Maybe I'll find something to sacrifice for the last 50 lbs.

If it is still on the stand put the crank bolts for the flexplate in, then use a square edge breaker bar between two of them and into the stand to hold it while you torque the front bolt.

Make sure your stand is sturdy, 200 ft/lbs is a lot.

For in the car I have made a tool out of a old bottom pulley and welded a handle to it so I could hold balancer to torque the bolt. Tom

So whats your guys opinion on rope in the cylinder...safe or not worth the risk?

Excellent way to bend a rod or a valve. The only time I've done the rope in the cylinder trick is for changing valve spring when I couldn't find my air fitting to screw in the spark plug hole. I wouldn't recommend it.

Whoa. Never thought of that. I will remove that idea from my webpage.

    Thanks
