my car which is a 1973 century sounds like it has a growling wheel bearing noise.i took the rear end axles out last nite to see if maybe the bearings were bad but they turned real nice on the axles, nice and smooth,so i put them back in,nothing in pumpkin as far as pieces or anything, gonna pull both front tires tonight and check those bearings, now if there both good is there anything else that would make that noise, maybe like the transmission.i cant tell if the noise is coming from front or back of car when driving it.

The wheel bearings on my car made noise for a long time but never felt rough when turning the wheel then one day it locked up on me as I was pulling into work. This is how they looked.

I lost the rear bearing on one side of my Wildcat - years ago. Bearings somehow got into the brake drum - locked the wheel, tore up the backing plate. Never gave any warning. Not fun.

Faulty front wheel bearing noise is a very distinct sound, and is much more noticeable when you load either one of the front wheels.
Turning the steering wheel left or right, while cornering, to load the bearing should give you an indication of which side needs replacing or adjustment.
Rear bearing noise is usually a constant humming, or howling sound that is constant. :TU:

For the cost involved versus the potential problems you could suddenly encounter, if I were in your shoes I think all four corners would be getting new bearings.

As long as you are into it that far, you might as well go ahead and put new pads & rotors on it. Since you would be doing the front brakes, the rears could likely stand new shoes and drums. Oh, might as well do wheel cylinders, calipers and hoses while you're at it. Better take a good look at those A-arm bushings. Since you have the front end up and torn apart anyway, you could... :puzzled:

This is how you get to be the guy with five projects, none of which actually move under their own power though three did... :moonu:

LOL Just kidding. Did you come up with which bearing or if it actually was a wheel bearing?

just wanted to let everyone know that my front wheel bearings on the outside were both bad.jacked up car wiggled tire top to bottom and no play and wheel spun nice. then i took off rotor and bearing in front fell out and i grabbed it in my hand and spun it alittle and it felt gritty then set it back in rotor and it turned in the rotor like crap.the bearing didnt even look bad,its like the race might have been worn, both sides were bad, replaced rotors and new bearings noise is gone.thanks for help.
