Hi, Screw driver won't turn them out, Drill won't drill them out, there hard as rock. Anyone ever tried one of those drill in screw out removal bits? Other than that I could grind the heads off them. Thanks Bruce
I use an impact driver, or sometimes can get vice grips on the screw. If that fails, better drill bits??? John
impact driver or coblat drills. Never use a grinder if you need to save the molding ask me how I know
If the screw heads aren't totally destroyed, there is a specialty tool that can help remove screws with stripped heads. Mine are Craftsman and they worked to get the trim screws out on our project.
Tyler has to drill a bunch of those out. Get some good bits, several of them, and get after it. We have also wedged a saw blade between the body and the moulding and cut the screw that way if there is room.
Thanks for the help, I'll let you know how I make out. How about grinding the back off the screws? Bruce
If you have any head left on the screws and a screwdriver still fits into them try a dab of valve grinding compound on the tip of the screwdriver blade. It will bite the metal of the screw and you can really apply some good torque to the screws and break them loose.
I'm going to try this tonight, thanks. With all the othe ideas I removed about 6 more last night. Thanks Bruce
Tried all the right words and a few gestures, didn't helpo No: Everyone's suggestions help remove about 50% of them I ran into a machinest friend of mine at NAPA today. He suggested Carbide tipped drill bits.:beers2: Picked up a 1/8" and 3/16" carbide tipped drill bit for drilling glass and ceramic tile. Those with the use of a #2 and a #3 grip bit, I was able to remove the remainder. Don't try to use the drill end of the grip bit on these screw there useless. Thanks for your help Bruce
When you put them back on Bruce, use a little grease around the threads, it will make it that much easier to remove em next time, if necessary ! :beer :TU:
take a good tipped phillips give the screw a couple of good solid taps on the screwdriver while holding it on the screw that should loosen the screw up for ya ,dont beat the crap out of it, a couple of good solid taps. Its an old body shop trick.
I used a air grinder with a very pointy carbide bit it was real easy to grind the head away so you can take the trim off the m it leaves a little for the vice grips. those screws are some hard stuff.:3gears:
:TU: Before I even attempt to take screws off so as not to destroy head of screw.I heat screw and area with MAPP gas (as in picture- in yellow)Mapp gas is a little hotter gas then propane(blue can). After heating it up for about 30 seconds I usually have 95% success on any screws comming out.with very little effort and no damage to trim .HEAT WORKS!! These are actually off a 73 Century I'm parting out , sold the trim pieces to a V8 member. Thanks for all your help. Bruce
