I believe you will be rubbing the outer wheel well lip with that tire on that rim. With a 15x10 wheel, you need approximately 5.5" of backspacing to be centered in the wheel well. That tire is just over 1" narrower than what I run (325 dragradials), but wheel has 1" less backspacing. Your best bet would try and test fit them first, as all these cars were not built to exacting specs and variances back there of about 1/4" or so.

But I think your going to be REAL tight. I've had about 8 different tires and wheels on the back of mine trying to find the best (biggest) combo that would fit properly.

What combo did you finally decide on?

I'm running 325/50R15 M/T DragRadials on a 15x10 Buick rallye rim with 5.625" backspacing. I did have to trim the top of the outer fender well back to insure no rubbing issues. I have about 3/8" clearance on the inside. I also run about 5-7 lbs. of pressure in rear airbags to take some of the bounce out of the back as with the upper part of the wheel well being curved, it would sometimes rub over a big curb or bounce.

Front is currently 225/60R15 Z-rated tires. Got nervous with 245/60R15 BFG Radial T/A's which were only rated to about 112 mph, which I do every time I'm at the track.

The 295/50R15 tire will definitely fit. But I believe that on the 15x10 rim with only 4.5" of backspacing, it will be very close to the outside upper wheel well area.

Approximately 5.5" centers the wheel in the wheel well on a 15x10 rim.

I went through this and had two sets of custom wheels (Buick rallye's made). If you want a 15x10 wheel, you'll want 5.5" of backspacing to center the wheel in the wheel well. Understand that these cars are NOT all alike. There are slight variations in dimensions of up to 1/4". That's just the way they were built back then. If you put a 295/50R15 tire on that rim, you'll have no problems with the tire rubbing. If you go with the 325/50R15 tire, you will need to trim the outer wheel well at the top to avoid rubbing/cutting of the tire. That's why I went 5-5/8" backspacing. It allowed me to put in a shim if I needed to get the tire exactly centered in my wheel well.

With a 15x10 wheel with 5x5 backspacing and a 295/50/15 tire, would the width of the tire patch be 10 inches?

Section width on that tire is 12.2", so your tread width should be right around 10".

What do you guys recommend for skinnys up front- no long distance or slalom type driving.

go to the bf goodrich web site. they have tire charts with all of the sizes in all models. it will give the recommended rim widths, tire diameter, section width (widest part of the tire mounted with air in it) and tread width. they do make a b.f.g. radial t/a 155 80 15 that fits on a 4.5 to 5.5 inch rim but it seems kind of short. check other tire web sites for the info or even check out the tire rack, they have the same info but for all brands.
