recently fixed some oil leaks by installing a new intake gasket and a rear main seal. Now I seem to be losing coolant. I cannot find any leaks anywhere. Can anyone tell me what might be happening? Thanks, Scott
how much is it looseing how is waterpump/theremostat gasket how old are the head gaskets? anything out tailpipe look like steam?
Re: The engine oil appears normal. I do not know how old the head gaskets, water pump, or thermostat are. There does appear to be a little white smoke or vapor that comes out of the tail pipes. Any ideas? Thanks, Scott
A small amount of vapr out the tailpipe may not be coolant but simply condensation. The reason I lean towards intake is it's the only thing touched recently that could cause it. Unless its pure coincidence and you popped a head gasket right after you resealed the intake(which is unlikely unless the engine overheated badly) . Or yer heater core started leaking and the coolant is hiding under the pass side carpet!
jack it up and inspect underneath engine , you should see water or white crust somewhere and follow up to leak, check oil again to be sure its not going in engine
Did you use RTV around the coolant passages at the corners of the intake, on both sides of the gasket?
what motor... what heads. if it is a 455 the 75-6 heads need a special gasket to work on the 74 and under block.
Re: It is an original numbers matching 350-4 GS motor. I have not noticed a smell of coolant from the exaust. I will check the passenger side carpet today to see if it is wet, but I vaccumed it yesterday and did not notice any moisture. I had the place that I bought it from replace the intake gasket, as part of the sales agreement, so I will look for thre rtv at the corners. Keep the suggestions coming and I will keep checking. Thanks, Scott
engine size ? year ? std or auto ? don't forget to check for radiator leak @ oil cooler section if so equipped in case oil does look "cloudy" . i've seen slight green tint on some plugs if coolant getting into combustion chamber . del
