Morning all. Yesterday me and my wife picked up our 76 Electra limited 455BB with 3 on the tree auto. Runs very nicely, and the body is very clean. Anyhoo, where the heck do you put your spare tyre?? Dont tell me you dont have a spot for it? I would put it in the boot, but with 2 full size gas (not gasoline - petrol - but LPG) tanks in the boot, it wont fit. Short of keeping it in the back seat, or not taking it with us on family outings, im thinking we may have to remove the petrol tank, cut a big hole in the floor of the boot, and make a tyre storage facility.

    cheers all

Yep - it goes in the trunk. You might have to put it where the petrol tank is.

You could try to do it in the style some pickup trucks use - a cable holds it up underneath the body. You use a tire wrench to wind/unwind the cable. That would require a bit of fabrication, though, but you may be able to cannibalize the assembly from an old pickup.

good thinking! I have a Ute sitting in the driveway, and I know a new winching system costs about a hundred bucks I will look into that. Thanks!

I have a 100 liter (30Gallon) LPG-tank in the trunk of my Boattail.... standard spare tire didn't fit, so I changed the tire for a smaller one; 195-50-15....it is only a spare tire whitch have to replace the 245 or 275's for only a short distance

yeah, I am going to see if the rim and tyre off my Commodore will fit into the boot. The BBB's tyre size is 235 75 15, and the Commy is a little more modest at 205 60 15. Its a pity as the Buick spare is brand new.

pic is of a Commodore, made by holden, made by GM. Shes-a-my-baby!

If the Buick's spare is new, and you fit a smaller spare in the trunk, you could always rotate the spare into service every few months.

I don't know if I'd spend that much on a winch to hold a spare up. I'd go to a junk yard and get something in good shape that would work.
If you do it, fabricate a manual winch - it's not as nice, but is less to go wrong on a bad night.

why do you want a spare tire ?
there are off those cans witch you can use to reseal your tire with and inflate them. i don't know how there called but i'm sure it's avalleble
some new cars over here have them standard instead of a spare tire

I'd not trust those sealants too much, even with a hole small enough for it to seal.

Plus, consider the tire gets more than a little hole. If it blows out, or you hit the sidewall with the rim as you lose air, your tire is basically garbage and you can't seal it, plug it, or patch it.
You are then stranded if you have no spare. At least a donut spare will get you somewhere (though I have typically replaced those with full-sized spares).

Keep in mind, a can of sealant is cheaper than a spare, not necessarily equal. Cost savings is what led to the donut (space saver) spares. It started on the smaller cars, so you could have a little more room in the tiny car, then some full-sized cars started carrying them.
