Help I can't find anyone that sells the original style key lock cylinders for my 72 GS. I would like to buy the 2 doors, trunk, and glovebox keyed alike. I also want the real "old" style keys. Year One, Parts Place, etc seems to only have the newer style that accept the keys with the black plastic covering. Thanks, Jeff Peoples
locks Do you know if the Chevelle locks will fit properly in a GS? I see on their website that they have a complete set w/ ignition for $53. Seems reasonable.
Im sure they will, local parts stores sell common cylinders off the shelf, i bought one just recently, and it fit in my 71 perfectly. Im sure it will work in other cars too, especially A-bodies...
Guys, The thing you have to watch out for is that each year key & lock cylinder is different. 70 was "J & K" 71 was "A & B" 72 was "C & D" So if you buy locks you either need to buy everything as a set, or buy the correct lock cylinders for your year and re-key them. Duane
When a lock cylinder is re-keyed, can they change the "letter," or just the cut of the teeth? I had to replace my ignition lock cylinder a while back. I did get Genuine GM, but it is not a "J"
Nick asks, "When a lock cylinder is re-keyed, can they change the "letter," or just the cut of the teeth?" That is exactly the problem, all the locksmiths can do is cut new teeth. The lock cylinders are cast to only accept a specific key blank, ie "J", "A" etc. Most of the retailers are selling "A-B" lock sets, which will work fine for 71 cars, but are not correct for other year cars. If you want to keep the correct keys, or are only interested in buying a "partial" lock set, then you need to get the correct year lock cylinders and get them re-keyed. I have a bunch of original locks, all seperated out by year, but I don't think I have any sets left. Duane
Thanks, Duane. That's what I thought. I went to the local locksmith to ask, and they said they could, but somehow, I didn't believe him... o No: My original lock cylinder locked up in "run" upon returning from the track in BG a couple of years ago. Scotty's wasn't open on Sunday morning, but they were doing inventory, and sold me a new cylinder. God bless Scotty's!!! I guess I'll try to find a good locksmith and have the original J cylinder fixed.
Duane, Could you come up with any of the parts I need? I would rather buy from you than from another company (becuase of your great input on this board!). I really need a trunk cylinder/key since I have nothing in there now. The doors/glovebox/ignition cylinder/key would just be gravy to make everything fresh and keyed alike. 1972 year model By the way, I have a similar story about Scotty's. Years ago at the Nats, I was fumbling around w/ my Holley 750 a lost the little clip for the float. I went to Scotty's and the did not sell that particular piece. They went into the back, found an old Holley three barrel (the only one I've ever seen!), robbed the part off it, and sent me on my way no charge. Since then, I've always tried to patronize them whenever I'm in BG.
Jeff, PM'd you about a set of locks. I'm parting out a 72 Skylark right now and have a complete set of keys and locks. It's going to the scrapper this week. PM me if you're interested in them.
Need a trunk cylinder lock for a 71 GS I'm looking for a trunk cylinder for a 71 GS. I have the original doors, ignition and glove box and can have it keyed to match. The body shop lost it during the restoration. ou: Mike NJ
Jeff, I have (1) matched set of 72 trunk and glove box locks with keys. These use the "D" key blanks. The keys are worn but work, I would take $15.00 for the pair of locks plus shipping. I do not have the entire key set, so if you need that I would buy them from Phillip. Duane
