so i just bought this 72 gs and have decided to paint the car myself. i'm not making a show winner here, i just want to have it all one color. the hood has been swapped for a skylark hood (no scoops) and the drivers side fender is aftermarket. the car is pretty much rust free, with the exception of teo 6x6 square sections behind the rear wheels. i've started taking trim off as careful as possible, and have half the car done. the color will be flat black and my plan is to cut a hole in the hood and put an aluminum scoop out the top. figured since i don't have the scoops the gs should have, i'd make my own induction setup. my question is, where do i start in this paint job?

Before you start....talk to a paint shop in your area....you will be much further ahead when a pro does.....you have to be a chemist w/today's modern paints and use special tools and techniques to do a good job...paint is expensive.....at a minimum $300-400 and then add your primers, sealers, clears, sandpaper, putty, etc.

Don't waste your time and money only to have the finished product look bad.

Do you have a place to paint it? Any dust at all will show up and look bad. Thats the first problem after its all ready to paint. Compressor and a paint gun are next. Without the right area and tools its gonna be tough. If you just need a guy to "shoot" it, you might get away with it for relatively cheap.

i'm in the Army and here on post they have an auto skills center with a paint booth in it. it has the compressor, the customer just needst to supply the gun and paint etc. i've just never done body work before and was wondering if anyone had some tips on how to do it. i'll keep researching the net but it looks like i may just leave it to the pros. well atleast the body work. still think i'll shoot it myself for the experience. i'm going with a flat black so it shouldn't be too hard.

George is even more right this time. I have $600-$800 in my car already and I am not even close to being able to paint.

IF you want the paint to last more than a couple years at the very least talk with some pros. at a local body shop. Most of them are glad to help and in the long run you will be WAY further ahead.

If you are interested I have a good fender skin for the left side that I could take some pics of instead of trying to form the metal.

    PM me if interested

    Good luck on your project

    How bout some pics?

You still can not shoot it yourself...reasons why:

    1. You are in GA and have high humidity....you will have to factor in chemical compositions for correct curing....temp and humidity will affect curing time.
    2. Your booth must have downdraft and water traps for a clean finish.....regardless of flat, semi, gloss finish.
    3. Your compressor must have a drier/water separator...otherwise you will wind up with moisture under the paint and have pops/blisters later
    4. You need to use an HVLP set-up for best results and least amount of wasted paint product.

As I stated before...days of painting the car yourself are over....you have to have the right chemicals, right technique and correct tools....save yourself the aggravation and have the pro do it.........you don't want to waste your time, money and aggravation and have a crappy finish.

In the process of getting ready to shoot my 69 skylark in the garage. Takes a bit of work, but can be done. I am doing satin black. Busy with blocking out the car now, but expecting it to be done by Thanksgiving. Sandpaper, blocks, primer, filler, guide coat, Kirker Hot Rod Black (top coat)... about $400 in materials so far. Bought most of it through Eastwood except the kirker. I'll be starting a thread soon to detail progress.
