    The car is a 70 Skylark/GS
The car will not get a top coat for years!
Some say grey looks unfinished black looks more planned/designed.

What color do you plan to paint it in the end? If it's a dark color like dark blue, green, black, or charcoal, then go black. Anything else you'll want to paint it grey. The important thing is that you use a primer-sealer, or you'll develop rust fairly quick.

Dave, you could also go with a tinted primer.....red, blue, green, gold, you name it, they can probably mix it. Popular with the Hot Rod crowd these days.

    are you priming it yourself?

If you are priming it yourself, be sure to use a sealer, as previously stated.

Now, I know this is almost sacrelige, but, a SCHEIB or MAACO type of cheapie joint can squirt an enamel on it for $300-400, and at least it will look ok from a distance, not to mention, sealed, and at least it would be a color of choice. One day, it can all be sanded off :TU:

Personally, primered rides never look quite right running around, and taking crap for a cheap paint job to me is better.

    northcorner Guess what I'm thinking..

The truck in my avatar is epoxy primer black with hardener. It actually turned out a little too "shiney" for me, but I was assured it would "flatten" out over time (that's the look i was going for). I saw a '70 Chevelle the other night at the track painted primer black, and it looked really mean. I liked it a lot. I'll vote for black.

Tough choice. I like black, but it reminds me of chevelles or pickups - so I figured grey would be a Buick primer color :)

I voted for Grey, as that's what I have my car in right now. It makes it look like the perfect sleeper, and I do catch some people off guard, but it needs some mods under the hood(Buick 350-2v) so I can back up the sleeper look. Primer is the ultimate choice, and Grey is my favorite, although Black doesn't look too shabby either.... :Do No:

Theres another thread like this, check it out, i posted pix of my car there. 71 skylark, with grey primer, black, and black with rallye stripes. I loved the rallye stripes, i made matching seat covers for it, and it just looked so good with all the chrome.

I actually plan to do the same to my Regal. I think flat black with fully polished chrome and a bright tomato red pinstripe will contrast very nicely.

This is a photochop of how I want the car to look. BTW the little thing on the fender will be the same as what's in my avatar.

I voted black because thats the way they did it in the 50's. I would have liked the option of yellow on top of your choices. There's a product,[mar-hide]Ultimate 2K-urethane-primer surfacer that looks and lasts good.Good Luck :)

    Dave,
To be honest, I would leave your paint alone. It's all one color and your car is straight with no rust issues (that I saw). :Do No:

That weird 70s style stripe would be the only thing to change but why, leave it for now. Save your money and get it painted right. That's only my opinion but I'd rather see you get her running real well before stripping any of the paint off.

I vote for $100 in interlux brightside boat paint, rolled on. With a little time and effort you can get an outstanding looking paint job for $200 in materials.

Use an epoxy primer if you are not painting it and it will be subjected to the elements. Primer is porous and will trap moisture causing rust. Need to seal the steel.

    Time Time Time
I may not have as much time as i thought to work on the car.
Thanks for the input Lon. The car does not have rust issues but looks poor in good light.
