    Toyota Tacoma

    Rob,
just my humble opinion. Buy the Toyota.

Picture this, its 3 in the morning and snowing and your in the driveway trying to get your old car running. You need it to get to a job interview at 7am. Working on an old car is meant to be enjoyed.
My advice to anyone your age is this: You would be surprised at how far you can go by just showing up on time ready to work. So whatever you settle on make sure it is reliable.

The Toyota will be cheap to operate so you will have extra money to put toward a 2nd car.(Your dream Buick).

Remember, time is on your side and keep saving your money. The average person using this site is probably in their late 30's early forties. When you reach your peak earning years we will all be dropping like flies and the primo Buicks will be all over e-bay. The sellers will be gray haired old ladies with no idea what they have.

I am 22 years older than you and I would trade places with you in a minute. Then I'd buy the Toyota, start saving for a mint Centurian, and go chase some women.

    Good Luck Rob

Get a banged up truck or small sedan for nothing, preferably from a relative that doesn't need their daily milk fetcher anymore. Maybe a friends reltive, just listen around.. A small piece of crap that just runs. Take it back and forth to school, cheap on gas, insurance etc... Then save some $ and get an older car too, one that you can have sitting for a few weeks not running, working on. This is what I'm thinking about doing, cause gas ain't cheap driving this boat to school, I just do it cause I think it's like an "event" every time I start it up. Having two cars on your isurance doesn't make that much of a difference, since you can only drive one at a time. Even better put one on your parents insurance, with you as an added driver or something, check the cost.

If gas prices go up, I'll probably save some $ by buying a 500$ Toyota from 88' and use it as a daily driver, then only take my baby out when I feel like it.

G body, regal or century if you want to stay buick. Gas milage is not the measure of cheapness for a car. It's maintenance. Pretty well theft-proof too, nobody wants `em.

well, just before this board went down, i was in-search of a car my-self, Im 22 (little age differance) when i first started driving i got a 1970 buick 4-door. My goal was to rob some parts off the car for my 70' 2 door coupe, and still use it as a daily driver (straight 6......and after i got done taking the good parts off, it looked like crap) but I could power brake it, 3 on the tree (manual) then i had a couple other beaters, then in january 2005 i was starting my new job (20 miles one way) and needed a car, after going thur car lots and getting exhausted, i figured, what the hell, Im getting me a V8 BABY!!!! 1st pic was a 70-72 skylark/gs found one in my area, but needed way to much work (body work, bigtime rusted) and it would'nt pass insp. floors were rusted badly, also checked out 2 camaro's, then came across a 1969 chevelle 2 door coupe, just what i was looking for, and i can work on, This week end its getting a full front end re-build with new ball joints, poly graphite bushings, kyb shocks all four corners, springs, the works, ill post pics. I still got my buick........and will never part with it, as that's my reallly bad car, oh with my chevelle i put about $35 dollars in the tank to get me back and forth to work in a week (that's being conservative)

    get what you wanna drive,

NOTE: since I've got the chevelle, Ive gotten a lot of complements, that's always cool, rarely will you get that with a new car

    msc66 still no vacuum

    can you say rust belt?

    Josh,

How long until that Chevelle is a rotted pile of junk? Growing up in PA I had to drive my '67 SS Chevelle every day until I got out of high school. Then I started buying winter beaters but the salt had already gotten the better of the chevelle.

Rob, don't waste a good classic car to the elements. If you want to beat up on ricers go with the mid '80's Regal, Malibu or how about an '88 El Camino? Small block with a 200 R4 shouldn't be too bad on gas and you can still throw a dirt bike in the back. Either that or a 4 cylinder stick shift mini truck and throw some nice hoops on it.

Save the Riv for when you can afford it as a hobby.
