Oh okay I think I have the idea now. I already have it set to rich by having the idle mixture screws out so far and whe I plug the vacuum it worsens the situation. Kinda like that?

    Sean,
Are you limiting the Vacuum advance cannister? The yellow springs will allow all your mechanical in early. You need to limit the cannister to 8-10*, no more. The Crane cannister unlimited will give way too much vacuum advance. It will surge, or ping, or both. 4.5 turns out is way too much.

Exactly. Your idle screws are out too far, making it rich, and "wanting" a vacuum leak to lean out the mixture. Turn those screws in some!

Turn each idle mixture screw in until the idle just barely drops off, going back and forth between the 2 screws until you get them right "on the edge". This will also correspond with the highest vacuum reading, if you've got a gauge.

GM used to do the "Lean Drop" settings on idle screws, where you then turned each screw in (lean) to drop the idle 25 rpm, for a total idle drop of 50 rpm, and then reset the idle speed. Gets you the a nice lean idle for good economy.

Okay so first I need to limit the vacuum advance in the crane unit. I can't seem to access the old threads that had the diagram posted in them .I should have coppied them from the site then. Anyone have that diagram around?

    So heres my game plan.

1st limit vacuum advance to 9 or 10 deg
3nd adjust idle mixture screws using vacuum gauge
4rd reset timing and make mark at 1 and 3/4 of harmonic balancer from the normal timing mark then try to get 32 deg total by 2500 rpm with the vac advance pluged. Then add the vacuum advance (full vacuum conection) on top of that.

Any comments or suggestions? I'm getting ready to go on a big trip with my buick so I need to get it tuned up. I've ordered the carb book so soon I can help myself along a little better.
Thanks for being so patient with me EVERYONE and for all the good advice.

Do the ignition stuff first, it has a LOT more effect on the carb than the carb does on the ignition.

    Sean,
Can't find the diagrams? I wrote this great post in the FAQ forum, with pictures and all. It's even a sticky  How could you miss it? :Dou: How to power time your Buick V8. Take a look.
