Picked up a 10 bolt 3.42 posi from c/l,only reason removed is he wanted to show his car and drive to shows, recently gone through-blah,blah. Installed it and it has a nice hum sound both on and off the throttle. Guess I've been lucky in the past on rebuilt units and even going through them myself without any setup tools. Where should I start, disassemble and check pinion bearings or lash adj or both or let a pro do it(its been awhile)?
Its easy enough to pull the cover and have a look at the pattern on the ring gear. If youve got a magnetic dial indicator check backlash. http://us.yhs4.search.yahoo.com/yhs...t&hsimp=yhs-att_001&type=att_lego_portal_home check the differential shims and be sure theyre not loose. look for damage on the ring gear contact surfaces. pitting galling etc lots of metal flakes in the oil That will give you an idea whats going on in there
check pinion for play seen several pinion nuts back off a few threads and obviously you gonna get noise then
once you verify that all the bearings and gears are good check the preload on the pinion bearing. Remove drives shaft, wheels and drums and put an inch pound torque wrench on the big nut holding the yoke into the pinion. With used bearing and seal you should have 5 to 7 inch pounds. With new bearing and seal 15 to 17 inch pounds. And as mentioned above look at the wear pattern on the ring gear. Wear should be near the center of the face of the tooth.
Thanks for the information. Will pull it apart soon, just needed a refresh on how to attack it. It is definitely a whine, mainly normal driving as its hard to tell under full throttle. Thanks again
