I've got the NEC 525. I've had it for a year. I like it as a phone, although I'd really like to get that RAZR phone! Personally, I would like it just as much if it didn't have the camera built in. The only thing I see it good for is taking pictures to use within the phone.

Outside of that, it's a waste to get a phone that you also want to be a camera. Just get a camera.

I know there are some out there that are around 1 mpx, but you can't even find a camera that you'd want to buy that low of a resolution.

I'll attach a photo I took with it (at full size) from a trip last April to Mt Bachelor in Bend, OR. I probably could have made some white balance adjustments, etc... but there really is no reason to with something like this.

I have an LG VX6000. I've had it for about a year now. I like it, and it takes decent pics, but it's no substitute for a real camera.

Max resoltion on it is only 600x800.

    Which carrier???

    I have a Motorola V551 Cingular's network.

Choose the phone according to what she want to use it for. If she's going to be emailing it, MMS, or just storing it on the phone. Usually carriers charge for sending pics, depending on size, method, and such. Some phones will allow you to load them onto your computer (infared, bluetooth, usb cable, separate SD memory card), which will bypass carrier charges.

If its just a "fun" camera then a NEC 525 or Panasonic phone are OK.. pic's are small (like the one above).

Motorola's (depending on model), Sony Ericsson, and Nokia all have the ability to choose pic size, running up to 640X480. Some phones even have a 1.3mp camera built in (MPX220, V3 Razr, New Sony, and I think LG has one out now). but those are up there in price.

Here's my 551, probably the best "all round" phone out there, and not too expensive (usually around $100 depending on your contract)

BTW... spent the last 5yrs of my life selling cell phones, If you're with us I can tell you which is the best(depending on your needs), but I don't know much about the others out there. I'm giving opinions about our phones.

Good Luck, Whatever you buy make sure they give you at least 30 days to return or exchange if you/she don't like it.

I wonder if they still work as a camera without phone service?

Ill take anything for free if its usefull.

Generally, no the camera will not work without phone service. The sim card allows the phone to fully boot so all of the features fully load. I'm usually running test mules of upcoming foreign phones though I have used some GSM phones. They can do stuff our networks here are only beginning to dream of. Japanese market phones are the most fully "optioned". In many other countries the phones replace personal computers.
