Looking to get a new machine for the best price. At a minimum, Pentium IV, DVD+-RW, 500MB RAM, 80GB hard drive Considering Dell, but what other companies are offering great deals through out the holidays? TIA
I bought a new machine for my parents at Best Buy.. The prices are so low!!! Not only at Best Buy, but everywhere. I used to be able to build a computer for half as much as I could buy a whole machine new.... Next computer I get, will be from a retailer...more than likely. (although I really hate all the addon software they put in there....YUCK!)
Marco, from a dozen years of Dell experience, I don't think you can go wrong with them. Of course, that's not to say another mfgr might not be as good. Dell has been very highly rated for some time now. And you can get some very inexpensive packages, or dress 'em up as you see fit. Shipping can be expensive, but they always have some type of freebie offer going on, usually memory upgrades or free shipping. BTW, I do not work for Dell...
I am with David, Dell is all we used at work, and recently bought one for home. Figure out what you want, then sift through the refurbished ones on Dell's website.
WALMART...[a-hem ou: ] has one basic model for a couple hundred bucks. 1.5 ghz AMD proc, 128 mg DDR mem, 20 gig HD, CD, ethernet, and OS. i cant build one for that cheap. the processors are all about the same quality anymore, with the only difference being if you like AMD or the evil empire [INTELL]. i used to like to pick up old Macs and put in logitex upgrades, but i have turned to loosing money on other hobbies, instead :spank: . like the old intell ad said, "how fast do you want to go today?"
Depending.... Depending on where you live and what you are looking for the web site I'll list below has some sort of inside track on all the hot deals and codes to use at Dell.com. http://www.gotapex.com/deals.php good luck
I also would recommend a Dell. My uncle bought 3 of them with the two years, two for his business and one for home. Lightning hit his business awhile back and fried the motherboard on one of the Dells. He had bought the better warranty/service package and Dell sent someone out and replaced the board no charge the same week. Other option is to build it yourself. I built my system spring of 2002 and it hasn't missed a beat yet.
i recommend dell to any of my coworkers & friends. i have a dell p2 at home that i bought in 1997, still on win95. absolutely no problems! one day i will have to bite it and purchase a new dell . sooner spend my money on my gs, though.
We bought a Dell 2 yrs ago and it has had no problems. Most of the big shopping malls have those kiosks where you can go and they are willing do wheel and deal. And shipping was free. For us it's now how cheap but how long it will run trouble free.
Marco, I highly reccommend a Dell as well. But do not get the bottom end, as they are basically like an Emachine. Do yourself a favor and get the LCD screen as well. The computer people are playing on the letters also, and advertising thier "flat panel CRT" and the picture looks like it may be an LCD. Here is a web site I view everyday that has all the Dell deals right on top. You can purchase as a home user or from the business section as well. www.gotapex.com Good luck and may the force be with you... Mike

Click on this... www.gotapex.com The top special is for the Dell system for $498 after rebate. Click on thier link in the lower section. That will open a new page with Dell and you will see the $498 system that they were referring to. Then click on the customize it. Then upgrade to the 512 Meg of memory, and the dual drive option of a double layer DVD+-RW that is an extra $129, just $9 more with the extra drive, go for it... And any other upgrades you may want. I figured that you have high speed and do not need a modem and already have speakers, both would cost extra if you needed them, but are just extra parts that if you have or do not need can save some money on. Any more help needed, give a shout. Mike
The Dell Refurbished PCs are a screaming deal. But they cycle on and off that page every minute! Keep refreshing until you find a deal you like. Sort by price. And DON'T get a Celeron. For the extra few $$$ a P4 will outperform it in every way.
I have never seen any good deals on a refurbished, and think I am not familiar with where to find them at in the first place. Needless to say, I agree with the P4 idea. A Celeron is OK for a total budget, but the P4 runs a good bit faster and is well worth the extra couple of bucks. Mike
How's this deal??? Am I missing anything I should get? Am I getting something I really don't need? I'll throw my professional opinon in. As Director of Information Technology for the company I work for, I buy Dell exclusively for our desktops and laptops(over 200 users). I also try to purchase the refurbs since I'm allways under the gun to reduce expesnes. I get the same warranty as a new one and the service is great. The refurbs go quickly, so you just keep checking until you see what you want. I have also purchased 3 for home use. As prevoiusly stated, do yourself a favor no matter what brand you purchase and get aleast 17 flat panel. The Dimensions are for home use but also check the Optiplex, which is what I buy at work. They are configured a little different since they are for business but still work fine for home use especially if you want a home network. Try www.delloutlet.com
I'd have to say stay away from gateway. Their tech support lines are all people who have english as a second language which is definately a fun thing to have to go through when you replace a hardrive 4 times, a video card, a power supply and eventually sent in to get a whole new motherboard. Took 40 minutes just to get the address to send it in to from some indian guy. We got a dell as our second "name brand" computer and it's held up pretty well so far. I would recommend checking off the highest memory amount possible, that's usually the first thing people upgrade since it helps alot.
Marco - You should talk to Gritty Kitty. Building a machine is way cheaper and you can get more performance and pick your quality level. Tricks are tricks with cars and computers! Parts are really cheap at a warehouse or computer show. - Bill
I would think the problem with assembling your own system, would be you have no system warranty, only individual parts warranties. That's fine for someone comfortable with tearing their computer down to pieces, or if your "assembler" is close by and willing to troubleshoot for you. I've had many systems apart, installed cards, memory, drives, etc, but still have no interest in building my own from scratch. I'll take a Dell w/3 yr warranty any day. BTW Marco, that's a great deal that includes the 17" flat panel FREE upgrade! I got my current office Dell 1.5 yrs ago, and that upgrade was about $350-$400 then, and I got shot down for that upgrade...
