I was told by a mechanic I go to that I couldn't convert my rear drums to discs. Well I could but for 3000 bucks. He said because of the "O" style 12 bolt, peg leg, axel I have converting to discs is very hard, and expensive. Why can't I just buy the conversion kit and that everyone sells? Does anyone know the truth behind the matter. Thanks for the help, Jeff
Is the rear changed? If it is the Oldsmobile 12 bolt it might be a problem. If it is the original rear end and is a 12 bolt, it will be a Chevy and the car would have been built in Canada. If it is the Chevy it will be real easy.

The Olds "12-bolt" (cover) axle isn't any different from any of the other GM 10-bolts with bolt-in axles, as far as the housing ends are concerned. If a kit will fit on the B or P 10-bolt axle, then it will also fit the Olds axle.
If you can do the work your self you can buy the parts a lot cheaper than that. Get the rear caliper brackets from a early 80's Riviera, Toronado or Eldo. these will fit on the rear, you might have to reclock the mounting holes and possibly add a spacer. The rotors are 5 on 4 3/4, axle flange may have to be turned or ground down to fit the center hole in the rotor, and you use the matching rear calipers with e-brake. I did this on the 10 bolt in my hot rod and it's worked great for over 30,000 mi. Also make sure you use a disc/disc master cyl. I also used the matching porportioning valve from the bracket donor
