Good point. What kinda gains did ya get from it ? I thought about getting mine rebuilt locally, but this is chebby town, and I'd rather have an expert do this.
Jon is an expert at matching up the combo and building the carb accordingly but any good carb rebuilder or even home mechanic can do a simple rebuild to generic specifications. Its not hard to rebuild a carb but picking the right metering rods for your combo and tuning the secondaries is another story. The trick here is sending a carb only once your combo has been decided. Headers, no headers ect what camshaft you have are really important and you dont want to have to send your carb back for another re-calibration. I would contact Erson and find out any info you can about the cam you have because its really important for a custom carb build. Without the specific cam #'s (cam card is best) you might as well just get a local to rebuild a q jet for you but keep in mind if you go for a generic rebuild you'll want to start with a Buick 350 carb since it will be jetted/metered correctly from factory (where as J will refine the metering anyway so its less relivent what engine the carb was build for). He runs the carbs on a test engine so they work perfect right out of the box vs an assembly line new carb. Jon takes this very seriously and the results are amazing. I noticed better fuel milage, better throttle response, no bog when the secondaries kick in, and generaly better idle and power.
Hey everyone, how does a 20 foot patch from idle sound? Like....errrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrp :bla: I can now break them loose from idle for 20 feet and with the secondaries, when it catches 2nd it rips 'em too!!!!! :bglasses: I didn't try standing on the brake and going... But I know it'll burn'em now, so why waste the tire? This is great.
Well, dad took it while I was at school to get tuned up, they new plugs on, and some valve cover gaskets, and checked the timing.
It really is. I will admit I was kinda sceptical at first, but IF they did check it, (it wasn't on the bill) I know it still has more in it, you can tell by driving it... and soon, with headers and alum intake, it'll have alot more p .... But I also read on here that headers have no effect if you don't have atleast a 2 and a half inch exhaust on it, is that true?
You really need at least a 2 1/2 inch exhaust with headers and an H or X pipe to get maximum benefit, and trust me the difference is clear.I feel it everyday.:TU: Don't let people tell you its too big! The aluminum intake I believe is nice if you have a cam and ported heads, but its a must with nitrous. I am extremely pleased with the ceramic coated hooker headers I got from summit. I couldn't stand the thought of having rusty headers.
As the one who started this thread (and so glad it sparked a great discussion that can help any of us) I have an update. Since posting this, I got an original style dist, with a crane xr 1 kit rebuilt and installed by Jim W. New coil, new wires too. Timing is checked I had alot of pining. I backed off the timing a bit, 32 total now with vacuum disconnected. I changed out the weight springs on the dist with some heavier ones, So now Im all good. No pinging there was a noticible difference in starting and running. Still couldnt really spin the tires from a stop light. Well the other day I posted about excesive exhaust fumes, and how do I tune the carb. I havnt picked up a vacuum gage yet, but decided to check the screws on the front of the carb. The recommendation was to put them all the way in and back them out 1.5 turns or so. Well I turned them in 4 full turns. Backed them out 1.5 The car would start but wouldnt idle so I adjusted the idle screw too Its running good now. Took it for a drive. There is a stop sign in my neighborhood. I decided to see what she had and .... wait for it...... :3gears: I left two 20ft marks!!!!! Thats the first time she has even done that from a stop. Around a corner she would squeek a little.. but today was fantasitc! I turned around went back to the same stop sign.. and left two more 20ft marks on the other side of the intersection. Thanks to everyone who had input on this!! I still plan to pick up a vacuum gage and try to dial it in though.. Im on the right track!
Hell Yeah! That's what its all about! It's definitely a unique feeling to fine tune a machine with your bare hands successfully.:TU:
Good to know that the power is back! You'll have the entire street paved it tire rubber before you know it! :Brow: Don't you dare start a thread on "How do I make my rear tires last longer" now. ElectraJim
Haha this is the first ive seen of this thread. Did you end up getting posi or it had it already? I read the first few, then the last. Cuz my car spun that one tire easily w/ my 350 2bbl. p
yea, without posi on mine I can drop it in low gear and smoke the crap out of the tires with my 350 2bbl. when the gators won the national championship this year I did a HUGE burnout in taco bell parking lot where the ground caught fire I have since went through 3 tires in about 4 months Gotta pay if ya' wanna play
i dont have to drop it in low gear, its just a hell of a lot more fun drive + open parking lot + no police = donut heaven I love it when im going around a corner, punch it and just start spinning in circles, kinda scary but nothing beats the rush haha.
yea, that's always a good combination funny thing i could spine my tires easily but couldnt do a donut if my life depended on it all i ever manage to do is a 360 burnoutl lmao byt yet my buddy in his slugged 67 special with a 300..no posi and my buddies caprice with lt1/posi managed to swing out
