Got a 401 nailhead scraping the 340, just wondering if I can use the 66' 350 switch pitch trans that came with the 340.
The stock trans. is the 2 spd. TH300. NOT a TH350. And, as far as I know, there was never made a TH350 with a switch-pitch only a lock-up converter. The "Nail" will NOT bolt-up to the TH300 trans. you have without an adapter. It has the BOP bolt pattern. You could search for the TH300 that originally came behind the GS Skylark's of '65-'66. Also, if the engine you have is '63 or earlier you will need an adapter for the rear of the crank & the flexplate/flywheel from a '64-'66 along with a starter that has a shorter nose. Tom T.
Your right its a st300 that came with the 340. So your saying I need an adapter and a special starter correct?
Its a 63 nailhead that had a dynaflow trans, I've got the flex plate from the 340. This guys says you can grind down the flex plat 1/16 and inch and it will work. http://buickperformance.com/switchpitch.htm Diffrence is I dont have a st400 i have a st300 and the flex plate is from a 340....
The flexplate from the 340 will NOT fit & is balanced differently. You will need an adapter for the end of the crank along with the CORRECT '64-'66 flexplate & the '64-'66 starter. Or one of my mini's. Tom T.
Ok I've got one more for you lets say I can get my hands on a 64 401 nailhead from a riviera instead. What problems would I run into with the 64 crank since it was not a dynaflow but a st400? Still trying to use my st300 transmission. ou:
I understand that you are trying to use what you have, but have you attempted to find/price a correct set up for the Nailhead?(I didnt want to assume money was the issue) Also, consider adding your location so we could possibly help you more. Ive come to learn that the Buick Brotherhood reaches far and wide. :beer
Yes price is an issue, live here south of memphis TN. I'm learning, and I appreciate all the info its not going to waste trust me. I've got acces to a few buick engines. I just hate spending money on a adapter cause the cost is about what I'm spending on the engine.
