I've yet to decide if I will do one of three things, but my main question is number 3: 1. Should I try rebuilding and retrofitting the TH400 I have now that came attached to the 455 I will be swapping in? 2. Should I sell the TH400, find a used TH350 and rebuild that (assuming it's a direct swap with no mods needed)? 3. Should I buy a fresh TH350 such as B&M that hopefully would aleviate a lot of problems (assuming this one would fit)? ... Parts America I'd love to have a 4 speed in place of the 3 and definitely doing away with the 2 that's in there now. Money is not the object here; reliability and fitment is! Sorry guys, I've spent an eternity within the sport compact scene and my knowledge is slim on the old and scarce muscle. Thanks in advance!!
Anyone? One more question to add - do all TH350's have the same housing? In other words will a Chevy TH fit up to the Buick 455 and into the frame the same?? Hey, I'm confusing myself here too people :laugh: !
the TH 350 should fit with no problems , I have one in my 64. There are 2 bell housing patterns , one for chevies ad the other BOP ( buick olds and pontiac caddies as well) . The TH 350 I have is a service replacement unit that is a dual bell housing that will fit either chevies or BOP and is built up to last behind a serious 455 . Not cheap but doable. The TH 400 I have not tried to fit but certainly others have , you would need a short tail shaft model with the correct ( different than you have now) length driveshaft to maintain the correct drive shaft angle. Another option is the 200 4r overdrive . It is the same dimensions as the TH 350 , can be built very stout ( again not cheap) and should slide into your car easily. Many here on the board are using this trans with good results , run a search and read up on it.
Trade- I'm sure you can find someone that will trade you that old 2 speed for any of the other 3 transmissions you want.
