looking for very hard, firm, shifts that won't damage trans and still have automatic capabilities. this is for a th400 trans. my th350 puked. thanks, dave
I installed a transgo 1&2 kit and set it up at the mid level of firmness. I think it shifts very quick and crisply but not harsh at all. Under full throttle, letting the trans shift itself, it burns the tires going into 2nd and barks them pretty good going into third also. Firm but not neck snapping. (Traction is a limiting factor.) I like it a lot. Very streetable.
I recommend Transgo :TU: I have used Transgo kits exclusively for the last 20+ years, in 100's of transmissions I have (re-) built. I feel they give the best adjustability and have the most thought into how the trans accomplishes shifts of any of the companies putting out kits. Most "race" kits focus on how hard they can shift the trans. Transgo focuses on how to do it right. Jim PS One product of B&M I will recommend is the governor weight kit. Get it! :3gears:
what is the difference between the transgo 1 and the 1&2 ? besides the price. is the 1&2 worth the extra money. will it shift any harder with the 1&2 kit?
What about sprags? TH400"s have 2 different kind of sprags I think. Which one is stronger? Or do they both need to be replaced with racing type sprag?
Gary: There is a roller clutch that is for low gear and reverse. This is the same in all year 400's. On the direct clutch drum is a sprag on the early model 400's that can be changed to a 34 element unit(from 16) for extra strength. Unfortunately, the later model(I don't remember what year this changed, 1970???) trannys used a roller clutch, which cannot be changed to the early sprag type. You can buy a drum with a HD sprag from most of the transmission companies, but, it can be pricey. Bottom line: I have never seen a roller clutch fail(although I have never used one in a race application), but, sprags fail with regularity in a performance application. I have even rolled a HD unit in the race car(don't know exactly why??), but, unless you have over 1000 hp, I doubt you could fail one. Jim
