So as I'm sitting at my watering hole a random question comes to me. In my youth there was a neighbor that lived up the block. Dude was a mechanic. He had a Cutlass that was very clearly heavily modified. As far as I remember he only took it out once or twice a year. The thing that stuck with me is that not only was it loud (in a good way) but it would literally rattle the windows in our house as he drove slowly by. Obviously he had a free flowing exhaust but was that the only reason for the massive vibration it caused? Because I don't think I've experienced anything like that since then.

It's all a matter of acoustics. If he had the pipes angled off the pipes toward the outside and had one of those very crisp sounding cams with high compression, I'm sure that's all it would take.

Yup, add ragged edge camshaft timing. There was a reason the Kenne Bell 455 C107 cam was nicknamed "The Window Rattler".

I run the TA 294-04F solid cam and it does the same. I can idle my way through a parking structure the resonance will set off car alarms.

I had a 67 427 'vette with factory side pipes. The motor was built by a NASCAR shop. Loose as a goose until it warmed up. The baffles in the side pipes were rotted out. When it idled in my driveway the windows sounded like they were going to shatter. My neighbors said the same thing. Luckily my neighbors were tolerant as I left for work at o-dark-thirty!

I can absolutely "echo" your experience!

Below is a customer's car from a long time ago. '69 427/435 horse, tripower, ported alum heads, roller cam. Hooker sidemounts had no inserts.

Could easily lose hearing on the left side after an hour or two of cruising. Didn't mind a bit!

Sorta relevant - Many years ago I was stopped in my '62 Chrysler 300 (Not the H model that I also had) by a Newton, MA cop. He wrote me a ticket for excessive noise. When he started to hand it to me I asked "Why are you giving the ticket to me?" He gave me the look that cops can give when they think they are talking with someone who is really stupid, "because it's your car" he said. I said that it indeed was, but that I didn't build it, the exhaust system was totally factory and not leaking. The next thing I knew was that he was on his hands and knees with a flashlight looking under the car. After a couple of minutes he got up and walked back to his cruiser with a thoroughly pissed of look on his face. I didn't ever get the ticket.
