Doo Wop Where were you in '62?

Has anyone installed the new Windows XP Service Pack 2 yet? If so, any pros and cons would be appreciated. I just got it (not installed yet) via auto update. Must be huge, took 45 mins to download via cable.

    TIA

Yea, it's supposed to be huge. Poor dialup users.

I haven't installed in on our XPpro system since I've heard both good and bad things about it, neither really getting good ground over the other. The only thing that I've heard about in multiple is that it doesn't let some older applications connect to the internet.

I have installed it .... don't really notice anything vastly different ... some subtle things ... but all in all ... just about the same as before ....

    I run windows XP ....

I agree... I got it maybe last week... no problems, no surprises. Just a few tweaks.

Lot of people are avoding it. I hear there is a list of some 200 program it can fubar up. Even MS ones.

"MS released a list of 210 applications that SP2 breaks...

Thay have delayed the release of SP2 for XP Pro...

    http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/computersecurity/2004-08-18-xp-sp2-delayed_x.htm

And there are reports of atleast 2 vulnerabilities in the ,new and improved SP2, and MS has released a patch for SP2 already (ahead of actually releasing SP2)

I had a group policy put in to not allow this at my work. It seems to be a lot of security changes and effect a bunch of applications.

I will do it at home as I don't see it really hurting anything here. Worse that could happen is I have to back it out.

Thanks for the info on SP2. After reading about it and talking to people I will not install.

Question tho. The update did come in but was not installed. The icon for updates remains in my taskbar and every time I turn comp. on I am asked if I want to install this update. How do I remove this icon from my taskbar? Right or left click on it simply opens it. System restore did not remove it. I am using XP Pro.

Was able to remove icon from taskbar by

    Clicking on install
    Choose custom install
    Uncheck SP2 update
Check off "do not show update again"

    Easy as 1-2-3

I installed Friday night on the main PC...... after the install it would not boot fully into the desktop. After a safe mode reboot, I disabled Norton Antivirus and Zone Alarm. I updated Norton from their web site, as they had an update that SP2 needed to work, and I left Zone Alarm disabled. It then rebooted just fine!
I ended up uninstalling ZA and running the newer Windows XP firewall........ seems to be much easier to get to and alot better integrated.
I also installed SP2 on the 2.8Ghz laptop.... I uninstalled Zone Alarm first and updated the Antivirus first too. The install went flawless on that.

Yea Mike, if you have xp, just use the integrated firewall, much better than any 3rd party software firewall could be.
