While driving today...normal conditions/ no rain the windshield wipers
turned themselves on...couldn't turn them off. Finally had to stop
the car and pull the wire harness from the wiper motor.
Any thoughts on what could be wrong.....I have seen some "mice"
in the garage? could they have chewed on the wires?
Everything is original...wiper switch/wires/motor 34 years old. Thanks.

chewed/barren wires that have crossed, wiper switch ground, or the wiper switch may have shorted out.

    afternoon.

The wipers are controlled by the grounds (park, low, and high). If the wires are not damaged, then most likely it is the 34 year old dash switch.

Replace the switch if the wires look that they are in good condition.

I see a switch for sale on Ebay for a few bucks......
or can you still get parts (switch) at NAPA, etc?

The same thing happened on my '63 Electra this spring. It may not be the dash switch. There is also an internal switch inside the wiper motor. When you turn off the dash switch, the motor keeps running until it gets just about to the park position. A cam inside then trips the internal switch which shuts off all of the power and allows the wipers to stop in the park position. It could be any number of things inside the motor. A bad ground or broken wire. A bad relay, bad internal switch or the insides might just be gummed up and need cleaning. If it is a 2 speed wiper and the speed changes from slow to fast and back no problem, the switch may be fine. I had to send mine out to be repaired as I had no clue what exactly was the problem, but I put it back in and it works perfectly without doing anything to the dash switch.
