I am currently installing under the dash of my 65 Skylark a CD player/radio and would like to be able to remove the radio without having to disconnect the wiring so I can install it in my other 2 cars. I am too cheap to buy a separate unit for each car. I need a 6 or 8 pin male/female connector that I can run all of my wiring into so I can have a quick disconnect. I have looked at Walmart, Advance Auto and Radio Shack and nobody has what I am looking for. Radio Shack told me they do not sell automotive radios any more. Maybe they should change their name to Computer Shack. Any way, does anyone know where I can get some connectors that will let me run all of my wires (Hot, ground, speaker, etc.) through a quick disconnect male/female connector? Also, any ideas on how to mount the radio under the dash in a way that it can be removed quickly and easily? I might try some velcro strips. Thanks.

although RS didnt have radio stuff in particular ... you could buy Molex connectors from them. they sell 9 and 12 pin connectors. they would do exactly what you are wanting to do.

I like to use those 4 pin rubber trailer connectors, I usually solder them in and use heat shrinkable tubing on the connections. I've seen them in auto parts stores. If you get desperate, go to your nearest U-haul store, they have them.

I know what you mean about computer shack though. One thing they still have that I like are their barrier strips. They hold wires in with set screws. They work good if you want to be able to switch wires around for speakers for some reason. Ask for part #274-680, it has 12 posts and costs $2.29.:bglasses:

here is what they look like apart ... they are designed to only plug together ONE way ...so you wont blow nuttin up.

i use these all the time and the rock ... but i recommend a lil solder too, rather than just crimpin .....but thats just the way i am.

Thanks for the info. I think that is exactly what I need. I even have a photo to show them what I am talking about.

their plugs may look a lil different ... but will work fine.

if you are running 4 speakers in the car ... you will need to go with the 12 position plug.
if you are only running 2 speakers in the car the 9 will get you by.

UNLESS.... you have a power antenna or amplifier to turn on ... then you will have to refigure what you need.

if you are running 4 speakers AND a power antenna and even maybe a dimmer wire ... you could buy a 6 and a 9 and use the 9 for all speakers wires and the 6 for everything else.

are you just doing a basic radio with 7 or 11 wires used?
    what brand/model is the radio?

    i almost forgot ...
when you buy them ... it will most likely be better/safer to use the male version on the radio side and the female version in the car side.

I am installing a Pioneer DEH-P3600. Nothing great, but good enough for cars that only get driven to cruise nights and car shows. I have it temporarily wired in and it sounds pretty good. Initially I will be running only 2 Pioneer 6X9 TS-G970M 4-way speakers, no preamps. Later. I may add a front speaker, so I gues I need an 8 pin connector. Any ideas on how to install the unit under the dash so it can be removed easily and quickly? Thanks!

Let me see what I can find at Radio Shack. If I cannot get what I need, I will contact you. Thanks!

remember, anything easy for you to remove is easy for a thug to remove.
i will brainstorm and see if i can think of somethin about a mounting.

I went by another Radio Shack today and showed them the picture of the connector you posted. The guy went right to a drawer and pulled out some 12 pin connectors. Just what I needed. When I told him the other store did not know what I was talking about, his comment was that most Radio Shack salespeople are cell phone salespeople and do not know a thing about radio equipment. Thanks alot for your help.

Again, if you think of some way to mount my CD unit under the dash so I can quickly take it out when I want to, let me know. Theft of the CD player is not a problem. The only time the CD player and speakers will be in the car is when I am with it. Thanks again!
