I have a '70 GS 350 that I want to play with and hopefully get in the 13's. I've never messed with a 350 only the 455's. I have a .30 over short block on the engine stand with 70 high compression pistons, a set of rebuilt heads with valve job(no porting), T/A headers, T/A intake,750 holley, 2 1/2" exhuast with dynomax mufflers. I also have a 2800 converter and a 3.90 geared 10 bolt posi I can use. I was thinking of using the Poston 114 cam kit. Would this cam work good in this combo? Is there another cam I should consider? Thanks. Ken
I'd say so, looks like the combo is there... No question you've got the potential for low 14's. Enough fine tuning should put you into the 13's. Start working on the chassis, and you've got the potential for high 12's... It can be done. Casey Marks' 350 olds is running in the 12's and it's pure stock... It's all in the tuning, as he says! The heads is where you will find the big gains, as far as HP goes. A set of properly ported heads on your combo will make it feel like a 455! Find yourself a set of 70 "small chamber" heads with aluminum rockers... They are available, and inexpensive, get yourself a $50 grinder and a couple of "bits" and start expirementing. Believe it or not, it is something a novice can do!!! You dont have to "hog 'em out", just very mild gasket matching, clean up, and work around the valves will give you quite noticeable improvements. Just read up on porting [lots of info out there], work slow, and be consistant! The 350 has explosive bottom end torque. It looks like you have the gear and converter to use it, but will your suspension put it to the ground????? That's where your ET's will come from. Also, what ignition you using??? I'v had fantastic results with HEI and MSD 6 or 7 "L". The only 350 I'v ever managed to nuke was done in by RPM's, so I like the limiter to keep me out of trouble. Good luck!
Thanks for the tips. I do have a set of 70 GS 350 heads I could work on. I think I may have an HEI laying around also. I plan on leaving the suspension pretty much stock but I do have 26x10 ET Streets and 275-50 Drag Radials I could try. Thanks again for the advice. I'll let you know how it works out. I also run an 87 Turbo T and there are alot of proven "Recipes" for different performance levels availible. It would be great if some of you in the know could post some recipes for 14's, 13's and even 12's with the 350! Ken
I have a similar combo to what you have listed. I run the TA 310 cam. It runs 12.7-12.8 all day long at 3650 lbs. Runs low 12.00s at 112 mph with a 125 power shot. Do some bowl work, gasket match the intake side. It realy will pay off. I also run stock small valves. I have only had this car to the track a couple of times, with a little more tuning it will go in the 11s. Also use the cap screw rods. Jeff:grin:
Jeff, are you running forged pistons with the 125 shot of nitrous? My dad has a 64 Riviera with a 100 shot. He has stock cast pistons and it seems to hold up fine. Just wondering how well the 350 holds up with it. He runs the nitrous right off the line a gets 1.66 short times in a very heavy car. I put a picture of one of his launches in the members ride section under the pre 68 cars. Ken
Ken, I am running forged pistons. I also run my nitous of the line with Mcreary street tires with a low 1.7 60 foot. Jeff

Re: Buick 350 combo Open up your wallett, spend more money!!! Your getting close to the maximum performance available with a [streetable] buick 350. I'm not saying it cant be done, but to better your performance by almost a full second over what you've got now will require $$$$$$ May be time to look into a Big-Block
Dave I'll take a stab at it. Fully port the heads, tune your 60 times down to the 1.6 range or less, upgrade your fuel system if it's not already, run a bigger carb. Talking to some of the Buick motor shop guys that are on this board will help too...........Ward
Trojan horse peeking in here Just saw this topic and looked in here to see if Tom Miller is involved in these discussions for his new Mystery Machine. Casey and I welcome the challenge to our W31's in legal Pure Stock racing with Polyglas or Radial TA's. We're not going SA because of the exhaust manifolds restricting anything further. His car and mine are 1 and 1 on the 2 times we've run, but he took a quantum leap this last year and is now in the 11.90's at 106 whereas we're only 13.40 at 104. Hope to trim that a little this year with some more tuning. Bring these 350 Buicks out ot the Pure Stock or Factory Stock races. We're tired of mixing it up with the big boys (but actually doing quite well, thank you.) :Brow: :Brow:
Can't wait to get P&G'd...No really 353 cubes Oh, I'm around:grin: Just sitting back open minded, and tight lipped trying to learn more about these "mystery" motor'so No: The secret is in the factory .020 over piston's:Brow:

60 foot times 1.69 60 foot times? We're lucky to get a 2.10 on Polyglas with our 4 speed and a 4.56. I think we'd be down in the mid to high 12's if we could get 60 footers like that. MIght have to try that at Norwalk later this summer. I've got a set of 10" slicks, a set of MT 10.5 Sportsman Pro's, and a set of 29 inch Drag Radials. One of them should hook.
