I have the Torque Tech 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust with DynoMax long case mufflers and exhaust manifolds. (455 in a 1970 4 speed)

    What do you recommend?

    H Pipe

    X Pipe

    Neither

    All inputs welcomed

I believe the X pipe will do the same thing as the H pipe (increase midrange torque), but with less flow restriction.

    xpipe all the way.

With manifolds it's my understanding the X is the better choice.

On a car with headers I would expect little gain.

Paul - all I have read say the X pipe is the way to go. BTW - which DYNOMAX muffler do you have - 17749?

Go with the X pipe. I had headers and 2 1/2" exhaust with H pipe on my 350. When I changed over to the X pipe I picked up .2 and almost 2mph in the 1/4!

It also dropped the noise level at highway cruising speeds so the car is a pleasure to drive, you don't have to yell to be heard. Still "roars" nicely at WOT to boot!

X pipe ....Build your own by welding to elbows together from NAPA. Save about 50.00 bucks in the process. I don't even open the headers up anymore its not worth it from a e.t. perspective.

Just for info. The Flowmaster rep. told me if you have a 3" or larger system on your car with 3 chamber mufflers the H works better than the X. :Do No: I didn't stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night - Don't ask me. Mike D.

What do you think will happen to your X if your driveshaft fails?
Bend? It happened to me :Dou:

Here is a shot of Magnaflow 2 1/2" X on a 455, nobody I have talked to told me a H pipe is better than the X system.

Thats the catch. X is better but which one. You need a well designed X pipe or it wont work right. What you want is to scavenge the block to X area, with the opposite side exhaust pulse. So the X has to be designed right so that the exhaust pulse get so far into the X, it can't turn around. So your not scavenging the wrong side of the pipe.

There is a bunch of science to it. Anyone can just weld and X out of pipe.

Some of the good ones look like both and X and a H pipe sort of. And some are very space age oval shaped where they just slice a tad off the edge and butt them together.

You could talk to Richard Waitas at Magnaflow.com, I am sure he could give you all the tech information you could ask for.

I have a TT X-pipe system, and feel it has given me an awesome flow (with manifolds) and sounds like a mean mother. I get comments all the time on how serious my car sounds. And it is not loud at highway speeds. A very nice combination, and I believe TT has done thier homework to work on a Buick motor well. I remember when the H-pipe was popular in the 80's and was a great idea then. The purpose was to balance the pressures of each bank of the motor. Now, with an X system, you get that same effect and you get the assistance of scavagging one burst to anothe cylinder burst to help keep a back flow of exaust being created. I could not imagine an H being better that an X in any combination (if done correctly...).

    My $.02 worth.
