Thanks for all the responses on a H pipe versus a X pipe. How does adding the X change the exhaust sound? My car: 455/manifolds/2.5" mandrel bent pipes/SuperTurbo large case mufflers.
It is not hard to imagine. First of all, think about the sound of a "typical" rumpety dual-exaust. The difference with the "X" is that now each pulse will be split amongst the two tailpipes so that each tailpipe has twice as many pulses (creating more of a "buzz"), but each pulse will be quieter (since it has only 1/2 the force that it would have if it was only coming out the one pipe). If you think about the "pulses", you will also understand why an X works better than an H hands down from a performance perspective. -Bob Cunningham
The X- pipe on the wagon got rid of all the resonance inside the car. It quieted the car down quite a bit. The exhaust tone is more of a whoosh sound than a straight duel exhaust. It sounds more like a roller cam big block car than a hydraulic cam car if that makes any sense. Tony
If someone could tell me how, I could do a 15 second movie of my car and post it. I just have no way to host it that I know of. I have Dr. Gas's x-pipe setup. It seems to take the rumpity-rump out of the exhaust and smooth it out to a more mellow, deep rumble.
