I've been trying to help my uncle w/ a minor problem on his work PC, but haven't been able to figure it out yet. He has a fairly new Dell (lower profile model that can be horizontal or vertical) running XP Home. It is currently set up for two users, himself as admin w/ password and one employee w/ no password.

The problem is that it goes into standby after 15 minutes, and we think its causing the fax modem to not pick up the faxes sometimes. He wants it to stop going into standby. We already went over the power management options and its set up as Home/Office, monitor goes off after 30 min. and Never for the rest, including going into Standby. My computer (XP Prof.) has the same settings and it doesn't go into Standby.

The only thing I can think of is a third party app. from Dell that maybe is running that we aren't aware of. I've been helping him over the phone as he's in Mass. I might try doing a remote desktop connection so I can look around. Anyone here know what it might be?

I had the same problem but I only have Windows 98. I fooled around in the control panel for a little while and it just stopped doing that.

The BIOS may be configured to go into stand by, in which case it may override the setting.

Exactly. The BIOS. Boot the machine and when prompted (right at the start) hit the DEL or F2 or F10 key to get into the setup. Then look for power management and turn it off.

Also F8? Correct? I have a hard time remembering what key my own machine is.:gt:

BIOS, :Dou: . How could I have forgotten that. Must be my Mac background. I'll have to have another tech session w/my uncle over the phone. I really am starting to think of putting and ad in the paper for doing computer services.

You might also try the Control Panel - the Power Options or Power Schemes settings.

Ditto on the BIOS stuff... Dell has had patches released at times for certain models also that may have an impact.

ALSO, if you still cant get it done at the hardware level, a BIOS update may be in order.
