I have decided to pull my factory A/C out of my wagon. I eventually will replace it with a vintage air system. Is there any problems I may encounter? I know it is a pain pulling it because you need to remove the pass front fender. I am planning on smoothing the firewall. Tim
I am wanting to clean up under the hood. That huge A/C box is unsightly. If I was going back to origional I would. Tim
I am doing the same project this week. I plan on restoring the box and replacing the fan and core. Are there better options?
One "benefit" of the aftermarket systems is that they may appear cleaner. Note that if you want the AC gone, that's one thing, but don't forget you need a heater and defroster if you're going to drive on the street, to be safe. I'm not sure what the laws are in a particular area, but the manufacturers are required by law to provide heater and defroster. That didn't use to be the case. Heater and defroster were options.
I am looking to install the original pieces back in my '70, just to have some form of A/C in the car. Please PM me with including a shipping quote to 19934.
I took mine out a couple years ago. I bought one of the heater only covers from American Grafitti (SP?) I think it was. The only other thing you will need is some way to seal the new cover to the fire wall and a non air alternator mount to clean up the engine compartment. I live in Michigan and don't miss the air. For any of you fellas removing your factory AC, please be easy on the old parts and offer them up for sale. There's lots of people who would like to have them and some of the parts are getting hard to come by.
Now THERE is an idea whose time has come! I don't have factory air, but if I wanted to make it that way, this would be the easiest way...factory parts.
I don't know about later years, but in '65 to put factory air into a non-air car required modifying the firewall. The factory switches were mostly vaccuum actuated too. The sight of all those old vaccuum lines going everywhere scared me off that route. Rick
Sadly, there's different holes in the firewall between AC and Non-AC cars. It's a shame that it couldn't be that easy. That's why there are aftermarket AC Delete plates for those who want to remove the AC. Back when these cars were just "old used cars", it was common for people to just hack off all of the factory AC parts under the hood. Now that the cars are desirable, new owners need factory pieces to replace the damaged/missing parts. There's a lot of cars out there with butchered AC systems, that's what I was referring to.
Once I get all the stuff yanked. I will probaly part with it. I may keep the compressor as I heard it can be used with the aftermarket system. I am making sure I dismantel it properly so if anyone uses it . nothing will be damaged. Tim
While the A6 is good enough to allow you hang swinging beef in your car, the new systems are more efficient, and draw less power.
HA good one!! I try to not let any "swinging beef" into my car, especially in the passenger seat. p Mike D.
Well, that kind of problem is, I believe, actually referred to as a "snow pig" in places like the Dakotas.
