Just starting to restore a 72 stage 1 4 speed car and it came from the factory with no power steering but seems quite the workout to move it around in the driveway how do they drive on the road or would I be better to convert it to power steering ?? Would this take away form its originality ?? Any manual steering guys out there who wish their cars were ps ?? Thanks all opinions appreciated Bill

My GSX has manual steering and the only options are AM radio and automatic...It is a little stiff at very slow speed but it is a good feeling above 10 mph. I like to leave rare cars as ordered....my 71 convertible has no options and manual steering.

I pulled the power steering out of my car because I like the road feel that you don't get with the numbed up power steering that they put on originally. Parking isn't too bad, but it will give you a bit more of a work out then power steering. My wife can drive the car fine, so it can't be all that hard. LOL

The best of both worlds would be to put a later model quick ratio power box on, but I personally like opening the hood and seeing nothing but an alternator hanging off the engine. :)

Manual steering isn't too hard to turn, but the thing I hate is the 20 turns it takes to go from lock to lock. That really sucks when you're trying to get in a tight space. I have power mainly because I'm worried about bending the sport steering wheel. Kevin

Hi, I have a quick ratio PS box from a Camaro in my 67 Skylark. I really like it. I also have a Grant steering wheel so I don't feel like I'm driving a school bus around. Year One has a few options on steering boxes. Good luck to you! Mark

If you have a garage and driveway I wouldn't worry too much about power steering.

If you have to parallel park often, power steering is the way to go, beleive you me

If you do decide to switch to PS, I would be interested in the manual pitman arm.

    Thanks

Bill - try inflating the front tires to max. I keep my manual 60's "boat" front wheels at 35 psi or better. It makes a big difference in effort required!

Power steering was created to make your driving experience
less fatiguing and more enjoyable. If you want to lift weight's,
can the power steering, if you want to make your driving experience more pleasurable in that Buick then go with power
    steering.

If you use manual steering every day, you get used to it and after awhile, your arms are bigger and you don't even remember what it was like having power steering.

Driving a 4 speed car with a manual box sucks. I swapped to PS and have never been happier.

Agreed........ My GTO had no steering or brakes, I just added pwr. brakes......... steering next.
This is the first and last car I have owned without Brakes and Steering.
    Good Luck

if a kid were to chase a ball into the street (etc. etc.) ......having the ability to zig and zag faster/farther would be nice.....

there are too many crazies making driving a more difficult task on a daily basis. if i am meeting a car on the road and some "dopehead" whips out from behind him trying to pass, i want to have ample braking and steering.:)
