Well, I think my starter is going south again. I had it replaced, what year and a half ago, two years maybe. Got off the train from the city today and into the car. Only think I could hear when turning the key was the solenoid. Sounded loud and strong, but nothing from the starter. So I get out the lug wrench and start banging away, try to start, bang, try to start, etc, but just clicks. So i call AAA for a tow. Then I try banging again. Nothing. Then I try rapidly turning the key, like double, triple starts, and it catches for a second. Try again and bang, it starts. Call AAA and cancel the tow and drive away. But now I'm afraid of just how many more times I'll get it to start. Why would it go bad in such a short amount of time? I do have an exhaust leak on that manifold, is it possible that the leak is over the starter and maybe its been cooking it?

new or rebuilt starter ? what is the quality of your battery & wiring to the starter. the last rebuilt starter that i purchased, several years ago, came with a one year warranty. all rebuilt starters & alternators are not necessarily rebuilt the same by any two rebuilders. in my opinion, a rebuilt starter should also include a new armature & windings on the starter wall.
in the past, i have had rebuild starters last only 10 days and others, several years.

Found the bill from the garage. States they used part#3631 starter and it was replacd in April '03. Taking a look online, that seems to match to a fairly cheap starter. I'm thinking maybe I should just spend the money and get the mini-starter that is being sold by one of the fellow board members. Everyone seems to really like them.

Solenoid click...a solenoid is essentially a big switch. You sure you have enough juice going to it?

Check your battery connections, ground and starter, on both ends. My guess is a cable end issue at the battery

Hey Zach.If it ends up being the starter(after you check the cables/wiring) you can buy a new/rebuilt solenoid switch for your starter if you choose.I put a mini starter on my GS a few months ago, they work real nice and you don`t kill your arm doing the re and re like on those old heavy full size starters.I would go mini if there is a listing for your ride which I am sure there is.Later,Tony.
