When I resigned my last job, I was offered jobs by 2 telephone companies, NorthWesTel, in Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, and TELUS, Lethbridge AB. Let's see, I have worked for NorthWesTel before, in Yellowknife. Good company (from my experience with them), rarely home as you are "on the road", as may be. This job was I&R (Installation and Repair) for Whitehorse and west to the Alaskan border. I&R are the guys who come to your house and work on the poles. Whitehorse, poles, winter.... next!

TELUS, well, TELUS grew out of AGT (Alberta Government Telephones). I sub-contracted to AGT back in the late 80's ILS (Individual Line Service) project, to get rid of party lines. All the AGT guys were happy, and worked far less than we did as contractors. Hmm. The big plus though, it was an indoor job, with an Apprenticeship, in Lethbridge. Now, living in central BC, Quesnel, I had no idea where Lethbridge was. So, out with the schooling maps and, bingo, there it is. Southern Alberta, mild climate, chinooks in winter... Indoor Equipment Installation tech job. a 4 year apprenticeship, that I had cut down to 1 year due to already having Communications Electrician Network Craft (Cable Splicer) apprenticeship from NorthWesTel. 1 year and 1 exam. TELUS sent me to a "refresher" course designed to help us pass the exam. On the last day, the instructor said "Who here has already booked your 4th year exam with the Apprenticeship Board?" I put up my hand and told him I would be writing it on the following Monday. He nodded and said "You'll pass. Anyone else" No one had, so he told us that if we do not take the exam within a couple of weeks, we will fail. I took it Monday morning and passed with 94%. Not my best mark, but in this case, one I was proud of.

The lack of snow here in Lethbridge never seemed to fizz on me until... I got my Buick. Suddenly, any snow was too much. They say a strong El Nino with warm temperatures and sparce snow this year in Southern Alberta. Works for me! My younger brother in Northern Alberta, well, sorry George. Colder and more snow for up there.

All in all, glad I chose Lethbridge, even though I lost a Son here on a trip to Edmonton. It could have happened coming down from Whitehorse as well. . . . .

Sorry, got maudlin on you. In closing, warm Southern Alberta good, cold Yukon Territory bad.
