The Gs club Newsletter in the upcoming issue is going to have a big article on Zinc in oil as well. They have found a good additive that put back proper amount of zinc and phosphorous in any oil. Since the old GM EOS is discont. they say the stuff they have now is better. GSCA sells it but not sure what it is.

    ZDDPlus:
After 70+ years of trouble-free, metal-metal engine protection,
the E.P.A. is forcing ZDDP (Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate = Zinc and Phosphorus) from domestic motor oil. If your engine was designed prior to the 1990s, your non-roller lifters require ZDDP
in your motor oil to avoid premature deterioration.
Dont let your lifters run metal-to-metal.
Keep ZDDP, via ZddPlus, in your motor oil.
Add the 4 fluid ounce contents of this ZddPlus bottle at
every 4 to 5 quart oil change.
One bottle of ZddPlus contains more ZDDP than two bottles of GMs EOS, which is no longer manufactured.

If you haven't kept up with what changes have been taking place in motor oils, you should be aware that a component that is very important to protecting older engines, is no longer present in oils currently available. For many years oils contained a combination
of minerals called "ZDDP" (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate).
The reason behind the removal, is that ZDDP adversely affects
catalytic converters. The down side of removing ZDDP is that
we lose critical protection for our engine bearings,
and for our camshaft and lifter surfaces. I attended a seminar a few weeks ago, conducted by the man who developed ZDDPlus.
He owns a number of collectible cars, and was very concerned
that the elements critical to protecting his engines, had over time been removed from the motor oils. He did extensive testing (through a professional laboratory), on many motor oils, and oil additives,
to determine if there was anything available that fit the bill.
He discovered that there was not, and decided to develop the product, and make it available to the general public.
One 4 oz bottle of ZDDPlus will treat 4-5 quarts of motor oil
    for 2,000 - 4,000 miles.
If you have specific questions that are not answered in the information here, please give me a call at 1-800-Mr-Shine (1-800-677-4463),
If you happen to get the machine, please leave a message.
I am very good about returning phone calls. If I don't know the answer to your question, I'll do my best to get an answer quickly,
from someone who does know the correct answer.
    Thanks - Rich Warner - Mr-Shine

I've been following a lot of the ZDDP+ articles over at turbobuick.com and I will be getting my car addicted to this stuff as soon as it is available.

Well until I can afford a roller cam setup anyhow.

Here's the reply I received from Amsoil..

Please review the attached article discussing this problem.

    OBJECTIVE:

Provide facts outlining lubrication requirements of flat tap-pet and camshaft style engines and the effect of motor oil additives containing higher levels of zinc/phosphorus.

    ISSUES:

Engine oils contain anti-wear additives and the most com-mon anti-wear chemistry is zinc dialkyldithiophosphate (ZnDDP), which contains a combination of zinc and phos-phorus. In 2005, in an effort to guarantee catalytic con-verter performance in new vehicles, the American Petro-leum Institute (API) and International Lubricants Standards Approval Committee (ILSAC) instituted API SM and IL-SAC GF-4 quality standards which reduced the maximum limit for phosphorus to 0.085% and 0.080% respectively. Both API SM and ILSAC GF-4 specifications also contain a minimum phosphorus content of .065% and .060%.

Previously, API SL/ILSAC GF-3 oils were restricted to 0.10% phosphorus level, so a concern arose that oils con-taining lower levels of zinc/phosphorus could provide insuf-ficient protection in high pressure areas of flat tappets and camshaft lobes found in many older cars and high-performance engines.

    TECHNICAL DISCUSSION:

Proper assembly lubes and oil additives should be used dur-ing the break-in phase for all new or rebuilt engines with flat tappets. These additives provide the extra protection required at the point of contact during break-in to help the flat tappet face to properly mate with the cam lobe. Once the break-in phase is completed, these additives should not be used because of other engine life issues created by long term use of these materials. AMSOIL does not provide break-in assembly lubricants, but one of the common prod-ucts is GM E.O.S., which is an assembly lubricant and is not, as stated by GM, an engine oil additive. AMSOIL does not recommend using any engine oil additives with AM-SOIL engine lubricants.

High-performance modified engines benefit from oils with superior film strength and anti-wear properties. The flat tappet/camshaft lobe interface is the one area in an engine that has extreme contact load. This load increases signifi-cantly where non-stock, high-pressure valve springs are em-ployed so the use of properly formulated engine lubricants is extremely important to reduce wear and extend flat tap-pet/camshaft life. In these applications, AMSOIL recom-mends motor oils containing high levels of zinc/phosphorus for superior protection.

    RECOMMENDATION:

AMSOIL AMO, ARO, HDD, TRO, and AHR all contain high levels of zinc/phosphorus maximizing flat tappet/camshaft life in stock and modified applications.

AMSOIL 10W-40 (AMO) and 20W-50 (ARO) are premium synthetic formulations which are recommended for API SL (gasoline)/CI-4 Plus (heavy-duty, on-road diesel) specified applications. They are an outstanding choice where high zinc containing protection is required in late model hot rods requiring extra camshaft protection.

AMSOIL (HDD) is a 5W-30 weight combination diesel/gasoline oil with a higher starting TBN to handle the signifi-cant stresses from high soot loading and acid generation in modern diesel engines. HDD contains the high phosphorus and zinc required for long life.

Greetings Turbo Regal Inner Circle Members 02-22-2008 SHELL ROTELLA(tm) IS NOT THE ANSWER FOR OUR CARS Here is the straight scoop about Shell Rotella(tm) oil. In talking to Richard Clark, Shell Rotella(tm) oil hasnot only changed their label design four times in thelast year and half, but it has changed the formula too. Meaning the latest two formulas do not contain the ZDDPconcentration that is desired for flat-tappet engines. Also, if you are like me and only have gas-poweredcars and trucks, probably have never even heard ofShell Rotella(tm) oil until this ZDDP issue showed itsugly head. Shell's oil's primary application is for diesel engines. Just look at the label on the back! Its secondary purposeis for gasoline engines. Example; if you had no other oilto put in your turbo engine, yes, it would be better tohave this in your engine than no oil at all. Look athow most of the Rotella(tm) oil is packaged. It comes ingallon jugs. You seldom ever see it in easy-to-carryquart size bottles. Also, diesel oils contain extremely high concentrationlevels of detergents to deal with diesel engines. These additional detergents actually reduce theeffectiveness of added levels of ZDDP found indiesel oils. All this information can be found on our website. www.kirbanperformance.comOnce you are on our home page, and click on theYellow STAR with the larger bottle of ZDDPlus(tm) forAll the general information, questions and answers, etc. The smaller bottle of ZDDPlus(tm) on our home page nowhas all the current ZDDPlus(tm) distributors listed inalphabetical state order. I spend several hours every day on the phonetalking to major engine rebuilders throughout thecountry. They have literally been looking for asolution to the ZDDP problem longer than most ofus, even before it was generally known that aproblem existed. I had one cam company buy 500 bottles the other dayand just placed another order for 500 bottles beforethey even received their first shipment. Many of you know I am not a gear head, mechanic oran expert on engines but in talking to all thesecompanies, I have quickly gained some knowledgeabout the problems associated with cam wear andZDDP issues. Just Google any 3 or 4 words related to the subject onthe internet and you quickly realize how massive theissues are in the industry. Type in "wiped cam lobes," or "ZDDP oil issues,"or just "ZDDP" and watch page after page come up. Since the Turbo Buick was built in 1987, it is atthe very tail end of the problem. Richard and I are often asked which oil to use. Theanswer is quite simple. Oil is something likereligion... a personal preference. Go with whateverwell-known oil you like to use, whether it besynthetic or conventional in the proper viscosityfor your application. The other misconception some owners have is they thinkthe cam issue is only associated with improper break-inprocedures with a new cam. That is not the case. Sincethe SM oils do not have adequate levels of ZDDP, wearwill continue to happen. This is especially true onhigh-performance engines. Keep in mind, the by-productof internal engine wear is metal particles in theoil! Again, I am referring to flat-tappet setups. If there was any doubt about this product, ZDDPLus(tm),I would not be able to get companies such as Eastwoodand Isky Cams to carry it. We currently haveinformation and samples out to several othermajor mail-order companies too. We expect many moredistributors to sign up once they review the referencematerial, related articles and test results.

From this article, if you can find or have PRE SM rotella use it. Otherwise, use ZDDPlus and oil with less detergent?:Do No:
