need some one to clear this up for me. were all the stage 1 cars built in flint? there is a 71 gs stage 1 up for auction in my neck of the woods on friday. vin is 434371z freemont plant. there is a partial build sheet that looks pretty bad so i dont know if its readable and does not have original block. also I know most the records for 71 arent availible. Iam going to go preview the car now maybe Ill have more info when I get back. Jim, Duane or Wayne any help or info would be greatly apprieciated thanks kirk !
In the 70 model year all stage ones were built at Flint. For all years all stage One converts were built at Flint. Beginning in the 71 model year Fremont did build build some stage 1 hardtops. No outside records are available for the 71 model year right now although there is some hope some will becaome available. An exception ate Canadian built cars but to my belief they built no stage 1 cars in a Canadian plant.
Jim thanks for you"re reply. After looking at the cars gas tank production sheet it has an engine upc code of L74.according to my reference book this is a none factory stage 1 car. Can anyone confirm? It"s a nice solid better than average car. Fire red, black vinyl top, black split bench interior,ac,455 4speed factory car. Very solid, minimal rust. anyone have a ball park value? #s match tranny, correct rearend, non #s motor, intake, carb and dist. Thanks Kirk
....My car is exactly the same as that one except it is an automatic..Right down to the color and bench seat.. It also has the Z code.. I have no documention on mine but if I recall it should have Stage1 options right on the build sheet.. Does it say anything pertaining to Stage1 on the option sheet? There are also some other tell tail signs if you go to www.buickperformance.com there is a section on Stage1 options..Nice find.. Randy OH I would put an estimate of 20,000 to 25,000 on that car...Good Luck
In case you are still curious, the Fremont, CA. plant produced 133 of the 801 Stage 1 GS hardtops built in 1971. I have no idea of the value of the car but it is still very rare even if not a Stage 1. Only 103 GS 455 HT 4-speeds were built in 1971, 20 of which were built at the Fremont plant.
Jim thanks for the replies! Here"s the scoop. The car is being auctioned tomorrow.the owner purchased the car 18 years ago represented as a stage 1 car[I"m sorry].I previewed the car yesterday and took my stage1 docs and non stage1 docs to show him a stage 1 car was coded L75 on the production sheet and L74 for non stage 1.The auction house advertised the car as a 71 stage 1[not a clone]. now the owner wants to represent the car as a non documented stage1.does"nt seem right to me they can do that when they have an original production sheet doc that verifies the car is a non stage1 car.Leagally I would think the car has to be represented for what it truly is[a non stage1 clone]. There"s a lot of interest in the car from other potential buyers.I just want a level playing field because I"m interested in the car for what it is!Don"t want to bid against other people thinking it"s the real deal. I want a fair shake. My question to the board or Marco does anyone have a stage1 production sheet they could post that I could print to side bar the auction house and show them with my build sheets to set the record straight proof positive! Thanks for this board and thanks in advance for any help or info! Kirk.:3gears:
I can't read the sheet very clearly, but it appears to be L74. If that is the case you are correct about the non stage designation. The Stage 1 option is always listed on the far right column because it is the WE 5 option, and it is unreadable. As far as a value, I guess that will be determined when we all decide to let the last guy bidding have it.
C"mon guys! From one buick guy with the sickness to another sure could usesome more:Smarty: help with my delema! Kirk.
Look at the front of a 70 Buick Factory assembly manual. The codes are set out there as I recall. L 75 is the stage 1 option andfL 74 is the non stage A body. L- 76 on post 70 models was the HP option for big cars.
http://www.stage1registry.com/stage1info.html Notice the sheet that is other than stage 1 has the L 74 designation.
Thanks Jim. Problem is I don"t have one, none the less great thought! Keep the ideas coming. T-4hours till auction!
Thanks Jim!!!!!!!!!! I"ve said that so much lately I"ll be saying it in my sleep. Had my doubts it would print clearly but it did good enough. Just what I was looking for:beers2: . Hope I get the car. ray: I"ll try to post the out come after the auction. Kirk.
