Hello everybody! I'm happy to be part of such a great community of Buick people! I put a 455 into my 67 skylark, one issue I'm having is the power steering pump sits so high, the belt is rubbing. I've read conflicting info on diff aluminum mount and a diff year metal bracket but can't find anyone verifying if it worked. Anyone know what brackets (cars/years) I can use to help lower the power steering pump? Thank you, and I'm sure by the time it's finished I might have another question for anyone who's done this swap into a 67 as well. Thank you!
I'm not 100% that they will fit the '67 PS if you have something other than the standard looking pump. If you have a roundish pump then you need the '68-70(?) BBB assembly. Otherwise you need the steel BBB power steering pump mounts that go on the front and rear of the pump itself. The pump and aluminum bracket are the same. They drop the pump just enough to clear the water pump. I believe somebody was selling just the mounts. I'm not sure who. Somebody might be able to chime in on who sell them. Picture of what you have would help.
A picture I found: http://www.buickperformanceclub.com/ps4.jpg Yours may look like this but the steel brackets are subtly longer, especially looking at the top part of the bracket, on this setup pushing the pump farther out for the belt to clear the pump.
It looks you might have the correct brackets, but possibly they are not on correctly? I think I have the same brackets but the 2 steel brackets that bolt to the front & back of the pump are more horizontal. Yours look angled up very high. Is it possible you are using the wrong holes in the pump?
Looks similar, but the way mine is mounted is the only way it bolts up. Any other way and the holes don't line up. Do you know what year and car your brackets are from? Thanks!
Looks like you are using the original small block brackets,,, you will need the metal brackets from a 67-70 GS.
Ok, thanks for the help I think you are correct! Now, any idea where to find those brackets? Sorry, I'm new to the Buick world but I love my skylark!
Ahh ok, I think I might have gotten ones from a small block. Now I just need to find brackets like yours and I should be all set!
Just to clarify. The triangular aluminum part is "universal." The two steel plates for a small block "slope up." those for a big block "slope down." The Parts Place brackets are what you need.
Thank you for the great information I really appreciate it. Next thing to tackle is the engine height itself. I used the mounts/pads from TA that they said would only raise it 1/8" but the hood hits the air cleaner. It has the edelbrock intake and carb on it from previous owner.
No, I have read about probably needing one of those. Any in particular that might work but isn't a rare find?
Here ya go, narrow your search on left side of page by diameter and drop..... https://www.summitracing.com/search...nding&tw=air cleaner b&sw=Air Cleaner Bottoms
Drop base air cleaners are easy to find. Here is one on e bay, https://m.ebay.com/itm/Mr-Gasket-9790-Chrome-14-Competition-Drop-Base-Air-Cleaner-Fits-5-1-8-Neck-/322152718976?epid=656163362&hash=item4b01cc6280:g:l60AAOSwepJXYbHa&_trkparms=pageci%3Af485efdc-b3ff-11e7-aceb-74dbd180a80e%7Cparentrq%3A2f7594b015f0a9c0dbdcac8efff96106%7Ciid%3A9 Lots more, do a search. They sell just the base as well. Look around for what you need.
Just a thought, If you get a slightly longer belt you could raise the pump just enough for the belt to clear the bolt. Another idea I had was a round alan head bolt.
