Evening everyone, Have an opportunity to get a TH400 out of a 70's Firebird with a 455 for $65. Seller claims it has a short shaft. I get that it may not run but I figure at this price I could send it up to JW to make it bullet proof to go behind my built 455. What's your guys take? Thanks, Kyle
Cant go wrong if you ask me. I have a long tail th 400 core for free if anyone here wants it. Pick up only Westfield mass.
What generally works better or at least fits without too many modifications? Short or long shaft? Kyle
shorts fit better, long were used in big cars. but either can be swapped around. for 65 that's a good deal
I figured for $65 not much of a loss if it doesn't work. Seems like I'll need a new crossmember, gas pedal, kickdown, new parking brake & fixins' & carb bracket. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/470845113659619/ Kyle
If removing a lessor trans, you will need to put the shortest TH400 yoke on your driveshaft. Done many here, never shortened a driveshaft. I do not know why you need a carb bracket, but the same shifter shaft linkage has worked between TH350 and TH400 for me, NOT for others. Set up the speedo gears in the process, better yet make any correction for error in your old setup. Bruce Roe
man your goi g to make me want to get a blaster setup just so mine can look that clean and then no one see it one in. what a shame to have something that pretty hidden. think nhra will let me put a mirror under my car permanently to show that thing off if I can get it that clean
Here’s a pic of the tag. Are there any other I.D. numbers I can look for? 4” tail shaft. Sure as **** it was only $65!!
Thanks Larry. Guy also said it was switched to a manual valve body. Should go behind my 455 with no problems I hope. Kyle
Is a manual valve body any better or worse than an automatic valve body? Know a lot about cars just have always steered clear of transmissions. Kyle
