'70 Stage 1 455 SS Engine - $3,800

    Pretty sure this was in its original '70 4-speed car that had an engine fire.

    From what I've previously seen on a Buick Facebook page, the seller had intended on bringing this car back to life. Looks like plans have changed.

    The seller(s) buy and sell a lot of Buick stuff, seemingly always “intending” to bring them back to life. I have no problem with buying/selling, but they always brag about taking on huge projects only to part them. This particular car was toasted beyond saving in my opinion.

    The 4 an 6 on top of the SS doesn't seem right. No such numbers on mine. The vin is pretty ugly also any clue when this car was built ? Every car this guy buys he claims he's going to save it and ended up parting them out. This car could be saved with a new roof doors, fenders and hood. The quarters and rear of car look to be salvageable but in the end you're stuck with a salvage title. I'm sure the transmission was melted to a pile of aluminum.

    I'll take that back it may not be a re-stamp the S S are in the right location the 4 an 6 should've been down by the edge of the Block probably a Friday built car ready for the weekend or a little drinking at lunchtime.

    For what it's worth, I appreciate the lead. Any of us 70 Stage 1 guys with not matching blocks are looking for the holy grail. I checked the Stage1 registry and don't see that serial number. Leads me to believe it's from a car that was totaled years ago. Of course I could be wrong. Would be interesting to know what that sequence number is attached to though, wouldn't it.

    Looks like this car, which was for sale in Chicago in '16. Part of the sale was the "original" hood. That is, the hood was original to the same "car" that the "matching #'s" drivetrain, VIN, & data plate were from however none of that was originally installed onto that body/frame.     Based on the cars history, and those stampings, I would be highly skeptical to believe that’s the numbers engine.

    Regardless, any engine going through a fire needs to be stripped down and checked. A $3,800 rattle can job is ridiculous.

    The Facebook groups have become a breeding ground for misinformation and people trying to take advantage of other people. Love the ‘72 GS numbers matching stage 1 4 speed with a factory m-22 and a U code in the vin.

    I'm not following how .040 means rough life?????? We very commonly go .038 over all the time........
    Is the extra .002 really that big of difference????????? I bet most motors are larger than that at the end when they come apart....

    Well for one it was involved in an under hood fire. I would go through it before installation, back in the day the maximum recommendation was 30 over. That extra 10 thousands makes a difference on certain blocks.

    Body & frame. The seller back in '16 didn't know the back story supposedly but I tend to believe him as he subsequently disclosed to me that someone looked @ it and said the frame # was incorrect.

    Original body/frame must've been wrecked or badly rusted or if just the body rusted they were too lazy/ignorant to swap the new body onto the orig. frame. They lucked out and it was a Flint body & may have even been in the right date range (don't recall for sure on the date). The two things they really screwed up on if trying to hide all this was the color change (Interior for sure - don't recall if exterior was changed) and they didn't swap over the 4-sp hump which had they done so properly the car may have gone undetected for a while longer.
