Just be careful for 1966...there was a mid year running change to upsize a carrier bearing diameter (left side I think?) so if I remember right, you'll need an early carrier for an early housing, late carrier for late housing. I don't think it's as simple as using an early/late bearing, the receiving side of the carrier changed as well. My memory's fuzzy on this, but worth checking into. Devon
This is the thread I was thinking of, but it doesn't look like much more info there. I'll have a look into my parts book when I have a chance. https://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/9-3-8-rear-differences.71740/page-4#post-1350681 Devon
Just pm Brian trick or Jim (monzaz) they'll be able to answer that for you before you proceed with the purchase.
I looked for years ..7 to be exact....before i found mine Look for a 70 riv GS They all came with 342 posi rears Scott
Found some part number breakdown for the '66 and up 9-3/8 carriers. Strangely not seeing posi info for carriers after '67. Devon
The part numbers on the gears won't help with the early/late '66 issue, the casting number on the carrier itself just might. We're looking for: 1374836 or 1374715 for early '66, 1380708 or 1380709 for late. And to throw in even more wondering about this stuff, I don't understand why Riviera gets different carrier part numbers than Wildcat/Electra. Devon
Unfortunately the parts book does not list the ring gear and pinion as separate part numbers. Just a part number for the set. As stated, 66 342 posi with bearings the same size on both sides. I will look for the 1376391 part number on the case but do not remember seeing one.
Devon, You are looking for it, not I as I know what I have. As stated this is an early style 66 carrier with the bearings the same size on both sides. I will look for the number the next time I go to the garage to apease curiosities, but it is an early style, period. Rus, you need to decide if you are interested based on if this will fit into your 70 housing. I can not answer that, but if you message Brian Trick as someone suggested, he can definitivly tell you. He is building an A body rear for me now and is an extremely helpful individual. You can tell him I sent you his way. For 50 years I have only done 1966 Buicks and do not venture into other years so I can not help you with compatibility.. Let me know so I can move on to the next interested party. Thanks John M Kuchtiak
